Big problem. FTM has a field labelled Place/Description under Census. The only other field being date, I have always used this for place/age/occupation/address....
Of course this all now goes into the Place field in Gedcom and into FH. I have started editing the data manually from the person list in FH, but have many hundred people affected.
Any ideas for speeding up the process please??

You might well be able to speed up the process using a text editor and search and replace, or if you have any programming skills to write a small program to do the split for you. One big advantage with FH using gedcom is you can easily use other tools to sort out the data.
The complication for your use of the occupation in the census rather than as an additional record in FTM is that occupation should really be a separate attribute. The other fields should not be too bad to code for.

Thanks for your advice, I am making some inroads into this task. Can I recommend 'Advanced Find and Replace for Microsoft Word' by Jack M.Lyon, to anyone doing similar, I have found this most helpful. It is a free download at: http://www.editorium.com/freebies.htm
