I've just started using FH. My old program had a method that allowed me to record military service, but the tags aren't recognised by FH. I can set up a Military Service event, but how do I define attributes such as event type (e.g. commission, mention in despatch, medal award, retirment, etc.), service (e.g. Army, Navy, Air Force, etc.), rank, regiment, serial number, and place?

Try downloading and installing the Military Fact Set from the Downloads section.
If that does not cover everything you can define as many custom events and attributes as you need via the Tools/Work With Fact Sets menu.
