Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Migrating from Reunion 4 (Not Mac)

Post by BruceW » 13 Jan 2009 19:22

I have just exported a gedcom file from a very old Reunion 4 to FH (I am a very new FH user) and have problems with source files (references in Reunion)which have copied over but show as single line entries in FH and which I don't seem to be able to edit, and a problem with some Notes which have also copied over as single line entries. Notes contained in Ruunion 'Research' haven't copied at all and notes contained in 'Residence' in Reunion have appeared as events/attributes but without any text. I suspect it is Reunion being so old rather than FH but is there a cure or am I just being dim somewhere along the line?

If the Reunion is so old (prior to 1997!), could it be that the Gedcom it's exported is V4 and not 5.5? This might cause some problems as FH uses 5.5. You can check by opening the gedcom file in notepad and looking at the first few lines. You should see a couple of lines like these
[pre]1 GEDC
2 VERS 5.5[/pre]
If it's a v4 gedcom, then the line will read [pre]2 VERS 4[/pre].

Having a google this is a common problem and yes it is a v4 gedcom problem. These people will do a free conversion to later versions of reuniuon which might be of some interest:

http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/version9/ ... rsion4.php

Or someone here might have some older software that can do both versions of gedcom (e.g. an old version of PAF from the LDS).

Hope that helps
