Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

.GFT Files

Post by RSellens » 21 Apr 2006 20:49

Hi All,
A friend has just given a file which had been sent to her as she can't open it. Looking at the file it has a .GFT extension which i beleive is from 'Family Tree Maker', and looks like a variation on a GEDCOM file when opened. Does anybody know for sure which program type would open this file, and would be able to export a GEDCOM file ?

Thanks

Richard

I think thats a file from GSP Family Tree.

http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=GFT

I suspect the program may have a GEDCOM export, but I have not seen the program around for a while.

It might be gedcom 4, if you post a little of the text I can probably make a better guess.

Richard,

.GFT is a programme called 'Family Tree' it is still available from GSP for I think £9.99!  I started out with this programme and from memory it only holds birth and death information.  I think that it is GEDCOM, but what version I don't know.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jane,
The file is a mix of text and binary data by the looks of it

I used to use Family Tree many years ago and although it used files .GFT it would let you Export a GEDCOM file, perhaps your friend could send it again. If not get in touch with me as I still have the Family Tree CD and I should be able to convert it for you

Would it be possible for you to let me know how you converted your gft file to a gedcom (or however you managed to extract the information), as I have the same issue at the moment.

Any code you have, or details of what the format of the gft file is, would be great, and save me trying to figure it out as well!

Does GENViewer support .GFT files? I haven't tried it as I don't have any .GFT files.

GENViewer is available from MudCreek software at http://www.mudcreeksoftware.com/

Hi Claire,
I am afrai that i don't have any details on the file format itself, i just wrote some simple 'asp' code (which runs as web pages under 'internet information services') and just pulled out the very basic information via trial and error.
If you want to email me the file, i can try my code and see what it does for you.

Hi
I was wondering if anyone had managed to convert a Tree Maker .gft file into a format readable by FH v4 ?

Like previous posts, I have been given a .gft file and am unable to access it. I'm assured that it was created using the GEDCOM export facility of Tree Maker

Thanks in anticipation

The software that created the .gft file is actually GSP's 'Family Tree'
