* Gedcom import date issue

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Gedcom import date issue

Post by JamesC » 09 Aug 2009 22:28

I have imported a Gedcom file from GenesReunited in FH4 (which I have on a 4 week approval before deciding to buy) but both the year recorded and actual dates recorded have (app) alongside each individual when received into FH. Can anyone tell me if this is a compatability issue between these two programmes or if there is a way that I can avoid this problem?. I was hoping to be able to carry out regular Gedcom updates between GR and FH but this would be impossible if this occurs each time.

(app) in FH means approximate and is it's way of showing a date which is classified as 'about' in Gedcom terms. About in Gedcom means a date which is not exact, or there is some uncertainty about it, eg. two conflicting dates

CALculated should be used if you are basing the date on an age at another specified date, eg a census.
ESTimated should be used when some piece of information enables you to assume a date, eg marriage event.

Jon

Yes I understand that APP refers to approximaite. But I have family members where I have put their known date of birth and following uploading the file into FH the known date is there but with APP alongside.

Gedcom import date issue

Hi James

Would you be able to open up the file exported from Genes (before loaded into FH) in Windows notepad and look for one of the dates that is wrongly appearing as approximate and paste it into a reply on this forum thread so we can see what Genes is exporting?

It may look something like this:

2 DATE 23 MAR 1806

or

2 DATE ABT FEB 1811

As Genes has only a subset of the facilities available in Family Historian you would be sensible to keep your 'master' data in Family Historian and just export to Genes which many users here do quite successfully.

Cheers

Nick

Thank you Nick I have used your suggestion to use FH for the Master data and upload to Genesreunited which has solved the problem.

James
