Export to TNG

I've been struggling to get a good export from FH to import into TNG. I've been exchanging information on the TNG Community forum on this issue. Rather than repeat it all here, I'll supply a link to that conversation:
https://tng.community/index.php?/forums ... problems/
As you can see from that exchange, I've been making some progress, but I'm not exactly experiencing complete joy yet.
I've been using the Export Plugin written by Mike Wade, so I hope that he might have some good suggestions.
Of course, I'd also appreciate input from anyone else who has experience in importing FH data into TNG.
Thanks for reading my queries.

Carl, I think you are discussing the Export Gedcom File plugin by me Mike Tate.
Both FH and TNG are extremely complex products with lots of options and getting the FH exported GEDCOM and Media to behave correctly is often a challenge. However, several FH users have achieved success and will hopefully provide advice.
Unfortunately, I have not purchased TNG so rely heavily on feedback from TNG users.
Do please study the Help & Advice pages provided by the plugin.
For example, the way exported Media files are named with a prefix is explained in the Frequently Asked Questions.
The complication is that FH supports Link to Face Frame features to display partial images but TNG does not, so the Media has to be converted to cater for those partial images by actually producing cropped image files.
There is also a dedicated Help page for the migration commands to use with TNG in the GEDCOM Destination help pages.
In the TNG Forum you mention Fact Witnesses which are an ongoing bone of contention. IMO TNG is out-of-step with all other genealogy products that support Shared Fact Witnesses with the _SHAR tag. Some users have their own workarounds to fix the discrepancy. There has been some dialogue with Darrin but no change in TNG.
It may be best to perform some experiments with a small but representative dummy Project.

Mike: Thanks for your response. I'm only now getting back into this sticky wicket, as you know sometimes life can get in the way of genealogy!

I will follow up looking at the materials you suggest. -- Carl

Well, I'm close to giving up and going back to GedSite. I really like TNG for the ability for other relatives to collaborate. However, I'm just running into too many problems, and I'm spending too much time on import anomalies, which is taking away from time I could spend on actual genealogy. As many folks, I'm frustrated with the Witness handling. The last issue, however, is that I can't create thumbnails via the mass routine because, according to Darrin, I have one media item that is corrupt. He couldn't find it, and I can't find it. I've hundreds and hundreds of media. Well, GedSite has it's own issues with the use of FH generated GEDCOM files, which John Cardinal has promised to fix, but they seem to pale into insignificance compared to the TNG issues. I believe it may be time to cut my losses and forget about TNG. I have one more support message to Darin about the media/thumbnail issue. If this isn't answered in a satisfactory manner, I'm going to take down my TNG site and point it's URL to my GedSite Site. -- Carl

I hope you don't give up over a single thumbnail generation. Many TNG users generate their thumbnails on the desktop and upload them. This avoids problems if your service provider places restrictions on your website memory usage. I use the following to generate my thumbnails.
https://www.fookes.com/easy-thumbnails?3.0
Works with all of my media regardless of size. May also help you discover which one causing problems.

I have been using TNG for about 6 years now -- I have tested just about every versions of WEB Versions genealogy out there. Some have some advantages over TNG - but most missing or formatting things have work around via MODs
Overall TNG is still the best. What thumb issue are you experiencing? I came from RM and my witness sharing is from there mostly but for the most part works fine for me.
