FH==> TNG mediatype blues

Hi Everyone!
Most grateful for any ideas on this issue.
I am using FH7 and TNG ver.14
I am getting maybe 20% of my gedcom with media/medialinks
and photos/associated medialinks appearing in TNG.
I have set things up in TNG via this:
https://pluginstore.family-historian.co ... generation
For example I might get my mom's marriage cert in event and in photos get her house she grew up in,
but no profile, and 8 other event photos, and at least 20 in the photo section of various photos of her and census records, etc.
On the other hand her mother has all showing in the correct place 100% complete.
I have done imports of :
FTM2019 (Gedcom)===>TNG
ANC===>RM (Gedcom)===>TNG
ANC===>RM (Tree)===>FH (Gedom w/plugin for TNG)===>TNG
all with the same results.
In the interface for RM, FH, the individual page, etc all look correct, and when I checked the medialinks and associated medialinks
they were all correctly there and linked to the correct image/filenames.
Each time I have prepped before importing a gedcom to TNG by:
1. utilities =>optimize/backup all tables
2. setup =>created tables
3. utilities=>restore all tables
EXCEPT
address, children, citation, families, events, media, medialinks, notes, notelinks, people and repositories
Thanks greatly for any help and hopefully what I was trying to say wasnt too confusing,
Jeff

Jeff, it might help us understand what is missing if you could post some screenshots of FH showing the Media and some of TNG showing successful Media and missing Media. ( Remember only 3 attachments are allowed per posting. )
Getting the Media to migrate from FH to TNG for first-time users of TNG often seems to be a challenge.

Mike,
Ok
Give me 2 days for my day off to arrive and I can get something up here.

I was going to suggest that this sounds like an issue with the GEDCOM import on TNG and you should ask this question on the TNG community forum, but I see you already have it posted there as well. I think your answer to this question is most likely to come from the TNG group.

Hi Harold!
Thanks, I had posted to the TNG community, at first;
and then it was suggested to post here in FHUG,
so that people here might be of aid, or others who
don't frequent TNG boards might get insight.
For me it was natural to go the TNG forums,
since it was a mediatype issue, and Ver. 14 has a new PHP version.
As well, I need the FH export plugin,
which in my case has work different than usual...
(another issue in another current post).
SO
I am in two worlds at the same time on this issue.
I do need (as Mike suggested) to provide some screenshots here,
(and most likely TNG Community), when I have the time off work in a few days.

Ok,
So
1. I followed the steps and upload my media files from Export to my media folder on my server.
2. I uploaded the gedcom from the export folder to my server to load into TNG.
3. I keep openmaps and the bare essentials of bot protection mods etc. in TNG.
4. I set the config. in setup and import setup as described in the FH articles.
5. I imported media via media folder.
6. I generated thumbnails.
Still, as well as RM or FTM gedcoms, the FH export gedcom had the same problematic effect
of medialinks lost in transtation. I have included a number of screenshots that have filenames to help describe what they are. I have the screenshots inline, not sure if on FHUG attachments are better for viewing size.
Well appreciated for any help with this,
Jeff

Please post a screenshot of the Media tab for Joan BONNER in her FH Property Box.
Also, a similar FH Media tab screenshot for somebody who does have a Profile photo in TNG.

Here are the media tabs for the property boxes of BONNER Joan and her mom WYLIE Grace.
A little small. there is a limit of 500KB? attachments do any better?
Thanks Jeff

I think the maximum attachment file size is 256 KBytes. Maximum of 3 attachments per posting.
Does not matter whether they are shown inline as yours are or just on the ATTACHMENTS tab. They are all the same.
Can any TNG users explain why some images are linked and some are not, or suggest any adjustments that can be made?

You mentioned that you followed the following steps.
I wonder if the issue may be in step 5. If you import the media using the Import option in the
Admin > Media page, that will create media records in your database, but it will not link those records to your data. You will still need to do that manually. For that reason, I almost never use this screen. Instead I Do the following:
- I upload all media directly to the media folder on the server using an FTP client.
- I then set up the GEDCOM import using the Admin > Import page.
- I always choose to replace All Current Data when I upload. I do all my edits on FH, so I find I get a cleaner load if I choose this option. If you make edits on both FH and on your TNG database this will overwrite any TNG changes you have made.
- Always check the Import media links option and the Import latitude / longitude data.
- Run the import by clicking on the Import Data button.
It is vital that you
always select the
Import media links option if your GEDCOM contains them, or you may end up with unlinked media items. The help page for the Import page states the following:
If your GEDCOM contains links to media, selecting this option will allow TNG to import them and set up the appropriate links. You must still copy the physical files associated with these links to the appropriate folders on your site via other means (e.g., FTP). If you do not want to import any media links, make sure this box is not checked prior to performing the import.
I am including a screenshot of the Import page for reference.

Hi Harold,
I am still puzzled as to the outcome was correct always in the past as
I always do the same way that you do, and did this time as well:

Yes, thanks, that's what I was looking for, but it didn't give me an answer, sorry.
Harold has given some very good advice above and I would recommend stepping through that. However, slightly contrary to what Harold says, I do not believe this will remove any media already linked in your TNG tree (this might have changed). To do that you have to clear down your tree in Admin > Trees > Clear. Note that that will leave your settings in place but delete all tree data, so be careful! Do a backup first if you want to try it.
Media imports in TNG are notoriously tricky. Once you get them working they are fine, but getting to that point is a trial (in my experience anyway). It's difficult to diagnose without looking at your setup in both TNG and FH.
Have you created any other Collections, or do you just have the standard TNG ones?

You are 100% correct Adrian. I forgot to mention that I always Clear the tree to remove all data first.

Hi Adrian,
I have other collections I created such as family stories, etc. that are linked to their folder on the server.
they are triggered from a added tab in the dropdown menus. i changed templates so i have to set those up.
the links are inactive at the moment.
Each time I have prepped before importing a gedcom to TNG by:
1. utilities =>optimize/backup all tables
2. setup =>created tables
3. utilities=>restore all tables
EXCEPT
address, children, citation, families, events, media, medialinks, notes, notelinks, people and repositories
I can add tree to the list

oh Harold,
I forgot to say that when I import my tree and next checked the media area,
links (not all) were there. I hit the "import media", because no images seemed to be there,
and likewise i hit "create thumbnails" to bring them in.....
a mistake?

I am not entirely sure what you are doing here. I suggest instead of doing this you do the following in the order presented.
- Run the utilities => backup for all tables
- clear down your tree in Admin > Trees > Clear (as suggested by Adrian.)
- Run the Utilities => Optimize for all tables
Then follow the other steps I listed. You should not need to create or restore any tables under normal circumstances.
This will create a link to every media item which is included in your GEDCOM and that is properly linked in FH. It will even create the links even if the media file does not yet exist on the server, but you will not be able to create thumbnails for it until the file is FTP'd over. If there are other media items on your server which are not equivalently linked in FH then they will not appear in the media list nor will they be link anywhere.
I wonder if this thread has strayed a long way over the fence into the TNG world instead of being about FH. Perhaps any follow-up needs to be in a new thread posted on the TNG Community forum (with appropriate context)
Thanks
Harold

Hi Harold,
Thank you so much,
I will give it a whirl and follow exactly as you stated.
I have the post in TNG community,
but you cant even hear a pin drop,
no reponse there in 4 days whichis a little usual.....
quite more response here for sure....

Thanks again , import; I will try it!

You're going to have a bit of a loop where TNG users point you to FHUG and vice versa!
Considering you are trying to configure TNG to work with FH7, and this sub-forum is specifically about importing and exporting, I don't think the mods will mind too much carrying on the conversation here, although there may not be too many FH>TNG users.
The amount of help I can give is limited because my TNG media setup is highly personalized with various Collections (Birth, Death, Census, Photos, etc.), and I use tags in FH to identify which collection to put the media in. I then run some self-written SQL on the TNG server to move and label my media. This is mainly because I got fed up trying to get FH>TNG media to work as I wanted it to "out of the box". Darryn Lythgoe (TNG author) tried to help as well but it didn't work out. You could try emailing Darryn as he is very helpful - he will look at your TNG if you give him the admin credentials and try to sort things out.

Well appreciate Adrian

I figured there might be some ping-ponging to get things running,
but once it it works, I do see the value of working with FH and presenting online via TNG...

Good point about the ping pong. In that light I will retract my previous suggestion.
The handling of media in TNG is insanely flexible as far as your media organisation goes. But with that flexibility can come confusion and complexity, especially when moving data between platforms. Any time I even think about re-organising my media in TNG I spend about a half a day just reviewing the WIKI pages and ALL of the help pages related to importing or organising media. Darrin has been very thorough in explaining things, but it can be tricky.
I am discovering the same thing with exporting templated sources. Very powerful export capabilities (especially in the plug-in), but (to quote an old prof) "read, learn, and inwardly digest" every line in the help pages.
H.

Just to follow up with your comment Adrian
...my TNG media setup is highly personalized with various Collections (Birth, Death, Census, Photos, etc.), and I use tags in FH to identify which collection to put the media in. I then run some self-written SQL on the TNG server to move and label my media.
If you are linking any media into TNG features like collections or albums; or if you are linking Grave markers into the cemeteries feature you will have extra work to do every time you reload a tree. The definitions of Cemeteries, and perhaps albums and collections will survive the tree being cleared but the links will not. Hence the need to run special SQL to re-establish them after each import. I do the same after every import, but I guess that topic is even more out of scope for this thread.
