Hi All,

I'm getting down to the last issues with migrating from RY3 to FH7 and have an issue with media files. The Media records are created correctly in FH7 for all media. That's a good start!

RY3 allows you to attach media to an Event. For example, an image of a birth certificate against the birth event or a video of the wedding against the marriage event. These seem to import correctly as media attached to the Fact.

RY3 also allows you to add media against a person, rather than a specific event. This is similar to using the Media tab on the Individual Property Box. However, these media items are exported from RY3 as EVENts with an Event TYPE and so are imported to FH7 as Facts with the media attached to the Fact. The relevant section of the GEDCOM is like this:

Manually, I can use Unlink to remove the media from the fact, then delete the fact and finally add the media to the Media tab.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I might automagically move these media records from Facts to the Media tab instead of manually?

And a second question. Media in RY3 allows the recording of the PLACe (e.g., where the photo was taken). This place data is imported into the Place field on the above-mentioned Fact, but it doesn't appear that there is a field for Place on the Media record. So, if I move the media from a Fact to the Media Tab, I lose the PLACe. Am I missing something?

The GEDCOM snippet you posted does not use a linked Media record, but uses a Local Media Object.
c.f. Our earlier discussion about links to records versus local data.

The only way to automate that process is with a custom Plugin.
The PLACe would have to go into the Media Note.
Is the snippet of GEDCOM you posted the RY3 exported GEDCOM or the FH Project GEDCOM after import?

May I make sure I understand the difference to Media Records and LMOs?

LMOs link directly to a file, leaving the file in its original location. If I want to add that same file to another person/family, I create another LMO. A Media Record allows a file to be attached, and optionally copied, and allows keywords, dates and notes to be added. A Media Record can then be attached to one or more individuals, families, etc, or even not (yet) attached to anything. RY3 has a Portfolio Object which is similar to a Media Record with links to a file, captions, date, location/place, sensitivity suppression, etc, but can only be attached to one person or event. To attach the same file to multiple people/events requires multiple Portfolio Objects each linked to the same file. So RY3 has an approach that is a hybrid of MRs and LMOs.

The imported media appear to be imported as Media Records. They are certainly listed when I click on the toolbar Media icon and select View All Media. My understanding is that LMO's don't appear in this list. When I go to the Property Box All tab for the Individual there are no LMOs listed. I have added a LMO just to see how it works and it clearly displays as a Local Media Object in the All tab. In addition, on the Fact tab the fact has a photo icon in the "more" column and clicking on that icon opens a Media Record. On the All tab they show as a Media Record under the Fact. To me, this all points to the media being imported as a Media Record.

The GEDCOM snippet I supplied is the RY3 exported GEDCOM.

The only difference I can see between the actual FH7 GEDCOM and the Exported from FH7 GEDCOM is the file details which is understandable as the export GEDCOM needs to have full file pathnames.

If the only way to automagically correct this is by a custom Plugin, then I'll just manually correct them. I'm not up to writing plugins and I have less than a dozen records to deal with. I'll just make some notes in my "Conversion from RY3 to FH7" document so that anyone else moving from RY3 is aware of the issue.

Your analysis is perfect Glenn

On import FH automatically converts LMO to Media records, which is its preferred format for Media.

You can put the fact Date in the Media record Date, and the fact Place in the Media record Note.
Then delete the fact and add the Media record to the Individual Media tab.
