* Transfer from FH7 to MyHeritage online family tree with photos

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Transfer from FH7 to MyHeritage online family tree with photos

Post by janeri » 02 Jan 2022 23:12

Hi,

what is the best way to transfer from FH7 to MyHeritage online family tree when I want to include photos?

It worked when going via MyHeritage's Windows software (Family Tree Builder), but I would prefer avoiding the extra FTB step if possible.
I tried once with the "Export Gedcom File" plugin set to export mode "Myheritage Family Tree", but that did not work (no photos). Maybe I overlooked an option or something?

Best,
Jan

Jan, that is exactly what the plugin Help & Advice page says: Export Gedcom File (MYH) MyHeritage Family Tree Builder.

In common with most online products (such as Ancestry, FindMyPast, ZoomPast, etc) MyHeritage also does NOT support uploading or downloading of media except via a PC based companion product.
i.e. Ancestry must go via FTM or RootsMagic, and MyHeritage must go via FTB.

It is better to use the Export Gedcom File plugin rather than the FH v7 GEDCOM if you want face frames and preferred media to be correctly migrated.

Thank you for a very clarifying response Mike

I did try to contact MyHeritage support twice about this, but their response was impossible to understand. Yours was very clear and to the point, thanks again

Hi,

I have experimented a little with this. I want to publish my FH7 project with photos at myheritage.com , but I also want to strip records with the living and/or private flag set, as well as some information about living people. I believe I can use the Export Gedcom File and the Clean Living Persons plugins to achieve this.

1. First I tried to run Export Gedcom File and then open the resulting Gedcom (standalone) in FH7 and run Clean Living Persons. But private/living flags seems not to transfer well in the initial export, so this this did not work the way I hoped.

2. Next attempt was to create a copy of the project with FH7 and then run Clean Living Persons on that copy, followed by Export Gedcom File. When I imported the resulting Gedcom in Family Tree Builder (FTB) it seems I have achieved what I want, and I expect this will sync well with a site on myheritage.com

Is this (2.) the way to do it, or is there a better route?

Yes, method 2. is the way to do it.

Do not open the GEDCOM exported by the Export Gedcom File plugin in FH or you will make it incompatible with MyHeritage. There is a warning to that effect.
