Sharing FH data with family

I have been working with FH7 this year and would like to share the results of my research with close family and would welcome any tips on the best way to do this. Ideally I would like to restrict access to family who I approve but having never set up a website before I am not sure if that is possible. As an alternative I am not sure if a website via say Ancestry would allow family to access to the BM&D records which I have pulled together. Any suggestions would be gratefully received! Thanks Nigel

Welcome to the FHUG.

There are several alternative ways of sharing your FH Project with your family.
They fall into several main categories:
  1. Suggest they install a genealogy application on their PC and then you can send a suitable GEDCOM with Media files.
Then there is no problem with sending living person details and no security issues.
  2. Upload the GEDCOM to an online family tree such as Ancestry, FindMyPast, ZoomPast, etc.
This does not usually include any Media images and there is the privacy of living people and security issues.
  3. Send PDF file tree diagrams &/or PDF reports of your family tree. This is easy and free with no issues.
The first two options have free and paid-for possibilities.
The first two options usually involve the Export Gedcom File plugin unless the other genealogy application is FH V7.
See FHUG Knowledge Base Exporting a Family Tree with/without Media for background details.

When you have a clearer idea of which options you might want to follow we can go into more detail.

Thanks Mike that is very helpful. I will have a look at the Knowledge Base - it sounds like what I was trying to find before my post. regards Nigel

It would be useful feedback to understand where and how you searched.
Relatively recently, we redesigned the Knowledge Base to make it easier to find advice on particular topics.
It seems that did not help you.

Mike, FYI, I review the KB search history once a month to spot what's popular and what's searched for and not found.

Steven,

You could upload web pages to a web server and put the pages behind a login prompt so that only your family (or anyone else you authorize) could access them.

My GedSite program will make the web pages for you, and my FamilyHistoryHosting web hosting service will publish the pages and provide the login security you need. However, there are other alternatives for both parts of that solution: FH itself and other programs will make web pages, and most web hosting services include relatively simple ways to add a userid/password prompt to limit access.
