Lost Links when Exporting From FTM 2019

Post by MFriend » 31 Jan 2021 04:08

Hi Folks:
I am having a problem with links not being properly exported from FTM 2019. On almost every ancestry.com citation (that was created by Ancestry.com when adding records on their site, not by me) there is a link that is visible when the citation is clicked on:
Image
When the link called "View Source Online" is clicked it opens the original source page on Ancestry.
The page(s) that are opened look like this: https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-co ... 09399:6061

Has anyone been successful in exporting a Gedcom and getting those links to export or work?

The first thing to do is to investigate what FTM 2019 exports in its GEDCOM file.
e.g. Open the GEDCOM file in a plain text editor such as Windows Notepad and search for the Source title.

As a general rule, online Media for such as Ancestry and FindMyPast do not get included in GEDCOM other than perhaps as a URL, which FH does not support very well and would only work if signed in to a subscription account.

Hi Mike:

I have looked more closely at the exported Gedcom files. In fact I exported it as "Other", and also as a Gedcome meant for FTM 2012 and a different one for FTM 2016. My thought was that if it was some kind of FTM custom tag it would at least be in the FTM 2016 Gedcom. Sadly, its not. When the gedcom is imported back into a new tree in FTM 2019, the links are gone!! This link is beneficial because on every Ancestry.com citation, there is the link (shone on the screenshot above.) that will take me (or whoever would have a subscription) back to the original source. For things involving an image its not a huge deal because FTM downloaded all the images for the citations. But for sources that are for example transcribed, that link is lost.

Since the url for most of them is not exported in any of the versions FTM will export it, the only option would be to manually copy that URL. If I manually copy that url I can paste it into the web link area which is right above the link.

The tag then is exported into the Gedcome (all versions).
The url and tag look like this as an example:
_LINK https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-co ... 33054:7163

So if I were to copy and paste the URL into the Web Address box (which I might only do for some of them since I have about 7000 citations from Ancestry), would I be able to do a copy and replace to replace the _LINK tag with something that FH 7 will understand? and if so which tag should I use. I'd like it to be a part of the citation, but if not, having it be imported into say a fact note would be ok.

On a different note, these URL's are not in the citation in FTM. I also have Rootsmagic 7 and checked it. It does not include the URL/links to the original citations.

I presume you know that those URL will only work if you are signed in to Ancestry with your subscription account?
If you are not signed in, or your subscription lapses, or the GEDCOM migrates to someone else, then the URL are useless.
In longer-term it would be better to download whatever those URL link to so they become local transcripts or images.

The new FH V7 rich text Notes and Text From Source fields support active URL links.
So it should be possible to convert each _LINK tag UDF to a rich text web hyperlink.
That will probably involve much more than a simple search & replace in the GEDCOM but a Plugin could do it.

However, before we can start considering that, the details of the before and after GEDCOM structure must be precise.
The first step is for you to produce some typical GEDCOM examples involving those _LINK URL tags.
Currently, I have no idea whether they appear in the Citations or the Source records and how they fit into the structure.
So that is your first task, to provide sample snippets of GEDCOM.

Thank you for looking into this for me.

Here are some examples of the links. This is for one person. I have also exported a gedcom with this person so you get the whole record. https://progresswithchess.org/Main Tree ... amples.ged

The quickest way I think for me to get those links in FTM so they will export in a gedcom is by copying the link and pasting into the web address box shone in FTM:

Image

The link appears to be inserted into or a part of the citation. Once I sync FTM to ancestry, the link shows on Ancestry in the following postition on the citation section:

Image

Lastly, I couldn't see the link in RM 7, but in the preview editon of RM 8, I can see it added to the citation section also as a web tag:

Image

I agree with you that it is very important that I eventually get "hard copies" (screen shots, etc). I originally started using FTM because it would download a copy of the images. I'm planning on working at getting screen shots of the index pages these links go to, but that is going to be a long process. But even if I have the screen shots, I'd still like to have the link to the pages because many times there are other clickable links on the page for other family members, etc. that would be helpful. :)

If you need anything else please let me know, thanks so much .

OK, that looks easier to handle than I'd hoped.

All those 3 _LINK URL tags are subsidiary to each Citation 2 SOUR tag.

So if you want the URL in a local Citation Note then convert them in the GEDCOM to the following:
3 NOTE <web="https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-co ... 4872:60901">
4 _FMT 1

If you want those URL in a local Citation Text From Source then convert them in the GEDCOM to the following:
3 DATA
4 TEXT <web="https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-co ... 4872:60901">
5 _FMT 1

Note that the URL is enclosed in <web="URL">

This also assumes that there is no existing Note or Text From Source linked to the Citation.

Hi Mike:

I'm a little dense I guess. I know how to do a search and replace of a single word(s) no problem.
Is there a certain program I should use the will allow me to replace the _LINK wit the DATA and then have the TEXT... on the next line? Also since each url ends on a different letter/character, and some of them vary regarding what tag is on the following line, how do I tell it to put the "> tag at the end of the URL and the _FMT 1 on the next line? If you know of a web page/article that explains it I'd appreciate it :)

(I think I'd like to do the local citation note you have below:
f you want those URL in a local Citation Text From Source then convert them in the GEDCOM to the following:
3 DATA
4 TEXT <web="https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-co ... 4872:60901">
5 _FMT 1)

I have the same problem, only importing from FTM 2014.1.
The FTM export puts all of my (11,000+!) web links into "_LINK" tabs, and FH7 brilliantly moved them in to the Note fields for each of the various records (as a GEDCOM "NOTE" tab)
I figured out the scheme that Mike explains in his most recent reply. I fixed one by way of the Note editor (copy, add Web Link, paste). And then I fixed another by way of Notepad++, but I, too, can't figure out how to do it in mass.
Another problem I have is that some of my weblinks are l-o-n-g and get concatenated, so that "> goes one or two lines down.
I hope for a solution!
I'm even willing to go back to the raw FTM GEDCOM export, and edit there, if it would be easier.

I need to recap to understand what is happening with both your scenarios.

Matthew says the URL don't appear in the GEDCOM exported from FTM unless they are in the Web Address field he highlighted as 2. in his earlier screenshot. Then they appear as _LINK fields as shown above that screenshot.

He wants them converted to Citation Text From Source rich text fields containing the URL.

Rob says FTM also exports _LINK fields. So Rob, are your URL in the same Web Address field as Matthew?

I have just checked and they do indeed import to FH V7 as Citation rich text Note fields containing the URL.

So the _LINK tag no longer exists.

I had just finished a Plugin to convert _LINK tags to Text From Source, but it now needs adjusting to handle the Notes.

Are you both happy for those Note URL to be converted to Text From Source URL?

And a big thank you from me too.
Yes, my FTM Citation URL's are in that same field Matthew showed. But I also have web links attached to various other records (Sources, Places, etc.). They all ended up in a FH Note field. If the item already had a note (in FTM), FH appended it with a blank line before the (text-only) URL. So would your plug-in handle them wherever they appear? And my concatenated ones?

Let me clarify that... (i just re-read your inquiry & my response)...
I have Citation-specific URL's that I'd like to stay as Citation Notes, and Source URL's that need to stay with the Source Record Note. None of them ever were in Text From Source (FTM or FH).
'Not to mention Places, Media items, etc. where I have web links.

For me, exporting using FTM 2019, none of my links (and there are a couple of dozen total) for this example person get imported (not into notes, no where). They are all changed from _LINK to LINK and are just left out of the import.

In case it's helpful, here is the actual FH 7 ged file from the projects folder (not an export... after it is imported into a project).

I would like the web links to stay with the citations, but stuck in a note file is fine for me... at least I could access them and click or copy/paste them into a browsers :)

Matthew, your imported Project experience is different from Rob's and mine, so please check a couple of things.

Use Help > About Family Historian and confirm you are running Version 7.0.1.3

Use File Explorer and check C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\General\
You may have to reveal ProgramData as explained in Family Historian Program Data Folder.
Does that General folder contain a gedcom_map.fhdata text file dated 01/11/2020?
If you open it 'carefully' with Windows Notepad, near the end there should be the line SOUR._LINK=app:NOTE2 that is designed to convert each such _LINK tag to a Note field.

Rob, could you perform the same checks.

Meanwhile, I will adapt the Plugin to convert URL found in any Note to become rich text web links.

Ah... that is helpful. I've been checking FH 7 manually almost every day for updates from the menu. I get this pop-up that says it is up to date (even though in the about section it was saying 7.0.1 I had just figured it wasn't displaying the number after the period):
Image

The .fhdata file I had was dated 10/20/20. I've updated it now (after finding my download email) to the latest, I I do have the : SOUR._LINK=app:NOTE2 in my .fhdata. file now

I re-imported the file and now I do have a basic text of the link in the note file for the citation (there is no title so if I wasn't looking for it I might have overlooked it).

Here is what my gedcom looks like....

Thanks Peter for the followup. I was able to update earlier this morning by finding my email when I had registered version 7. Version wise, I'm at the latest :)

I'm surprised you missed all the advice in this and the Email forum about updates to FH v7.
The Help > Check for Updates does not inform you about minor patch releases, although some may be important for you.

The attached Move Note URL to Rich Text Web Link Plugin Version 0.1 Date 02 Feb 2021 should convert any URL found in any Note to a rich text active web link in the same Note.
[ EDIT Attachment deleted as V1.1 is now in the Plugin Store. ]

It reports how many URL get converted but otherwise is silent.
I decided against a Result Set as there could be a very large number of conversions.

I post a follow-up for the benefit of other FTM migrants; may it be of help.
One note of clarification: my experience is FTM2014.1-to-FH7; your mileage may vary.

FTM exports web links entered into that “Web Address” field of the Citation window (#2 in MFriend’s screenshot above) without concatenation – even if they’re several hundred characters long (which many URL’s are; and which is non-GEDCOM-compliant line length). This is important, as will follow…
FH gracefully and thankfully appends the value of these '_LINK' tabs to the Note field of the associated record (correctly tabbed and correctly concatenated). No data lost.
The plug-in Mike wrote beautifully converts these Note URLs to Rich Text Web Links.

But…
To put it politely, FTM does not produce a GEDCOM-standard compliant export, and does it inconsistently in different aspects of the conversion.
A known problem is that FTM uses the CONC tag for concatenation (word wrapping) incorrectly. The GEDCOM requirement for CONC usage is to either break the text line in the middle of a word, or if at the end of a word, to add a space to the first of the next CONC line. FTM (usually) breaks at the end of a word and doesn’t add the appropriate space.
The FH import process recognizes this, and will offer to fix it. Choose the “Each line contains two words separated by a hyphen” option, and FH brilliantly repairs the issue.

I had web links in many other places (besides that “Web Address” field of the Citation window) in my FTM file – used in various notes attached to media, facts, and other. FTM exported these as the notes they are, and concatenated (if they were “too long”).
The FH “repair concatenation” scheme then results in a space being added into this long string.
The Move Note URL to Rich Text Web Link plug-in then thinks this space is the end of the URL string, and therefore converts only this part.

Recognizing this, I went into the FH GEDCOM to easily find them, and then fixed them within FH (edit note - delete the space and convert the whole string to a rich text link). All is well!
Luckily, I didn’t have too many of these to do this manually. (Most of this case were short enough strings to avoid concatenation, and the plug-in worked fine, just like the _LINK ones which were imported/converted to Local Notes.) I don’t know enough about plug-ins yet to know if this would be doable by way of a plug-in, but i doubt it. FTM’s inconsistency is to blame.

But now this is great! In FTM, I would have to copy & paste these (not in citation Web Address) links into a browser; they weren’t ‘hot’ links. Now all my web links are “one click” to the web page. I’m loving FH more as I use it.

‘Sorry for the long (rambling?) dissertation. I hope to help fellow FTM refugees. And thanks again to Mike for the plug-in.

Thank you for that tip Rob. You will be glad to hear that the CONCatenation problem has been corrected in FTM 2019.
So unless users still have FTM 2014 and have very long URL they are unlikely to experience the same problem.
