Exporting media with frame links to Gedsite
I am using the Export Gedcom File plugin to export to Gedsite.
I want to use a group photo with frame links to create portraits of individuals within that group.
I have tried the PART~ABS and PART~LMO options. Both of these create new image files from each frame, which are correctly displayed in Gedsite.
The caption I want on each portrait is the name of the individual who is in the frame, so when I create the frame link, I check the "note as caption" option.
But when I display my site, the images all have the same caption - that of the group photo.
I'm not sure if I need some other option on export, or if I need to do something else in Gedsite, so I'll start here ...
Thanks
Alyn

Re: Exporting media with frame links to Gedsite
When you tick the Use Note as Caption option do you put any caption text in the unlabelled Note box to its left?
BTW: That is explained in the Help for that tick option. Where did you think the caption would come from?

Mike,
I put the person's name in the link note field.

Re: Exporting media with frame links to Gedsite
Perhaps you should initially raise this problem with John Cardinal on the GedSite forums.
I discussed the Export Gedcom File options with John and he wanted unaltered FH GEDCOM to be sent to GedSite.
The only significant addition is the optional inclusion of Fact Set Sentence Template definitions.
So if they are not needed you should not need to use the plugin at all.
If certain FH features are not being honoured in GedSite then ask John if they can be supported.

Re: Exporting media with frame links to Gedsite
Thanks Mike,
Having looked into this a bit more, it seems that all the images generated from the frame links have the same title (TITL) record in the exported GEDCOM, and this is what Gedsite uses for the caption.
So for now the only option I have is to create new media from the frames - actually it's not a huge job for me, as I have only a handful of group photos that I want to treat in this way.

Re: Exporting media with frame links to Gedsite
Is there any way you can customise GedSite to use the Caption Note in the GEDCOM file?
All the Media modes that include Part Frames have a NOTE line providing the Caption text if any exists.
e.g.
2 NOTE Caption Note: Link Note Text
Is there any way that could be used instead of, or appended to, the TITL text?

Re: Exporting media with frame links to Gedsite
According to the Gedsite help ...
I cannot see any other way to configure the caption. In any case, for images which are to be displayed in their entirety, the TITL record gives the expected result, and Gedsite settings typically can't be applied selectively.

I don't see anywhere to tell Gedsite what to do with the NOTE line.Caption Preference
GEDCOM files include a TITL record which is typically the caption for an image. Image files may also include caption text.
If Caption Preference is set to Favor Exhibit, GedSite will use the GEDCOM TITL record value as the image caption. If there is no TITL record value, GedSite will use the caption from the image file. Favor Exhibit is the default value.
If Caption Preference is set to Favor Image File, GedSite will use the caption from the image file as the image caption. If there is no caption in the image file, GedSite will use the GEDCOM TITL record value.

OK, I will put any changes to the Plugin for this problem on the backburner.
These part frames and captions are so unique to FH that it often poses problems when exported to other products.

Re: Exporting media with frame links to Gedsite
I think the difficulty is that in FH frames don't take on a life of their own as separate media records with a title and a note. In my case:
I already use a photo-editing program (GIMP) to clean up my images, so it's not a huge step to extract part images and abandon FH frames altogether.
Alyn
When I put a frame around a face, I would like to change both those bits of information to focus on the framed individual. So, in this instance, the TITL would change, and so would the _NOTE. As the actual wording would be different in every case, a plugin wouldn't be the way to go.1 TITL Edward Stanton Roberts and siblings
1 _NOTE Back row: Sally Roberts, Mattie Evans, Edward Stanton Roberts, Hannah Jones
2 CONT Front row: Robert Roberts, Martha Roberts, David Thomas Roberts

Re: Exporting media with frame links to Gedsite
When you add a Frame and add Link Note text and tick Use Note as Caption then within the Media record there is a dedicated Link/Note entry that includes that Link Note text and the Use Note as Caption option.
You can see that Link/Note in the All tab of the Media record.
That Link/Note entry is associated with the record that holds the image Frame of that Media item.
In the GEDCOM it also holds the AREA co-ordinates of the Frame but not shown in the All tab.
So it is perfectly feasible for GedSite to recreate what FH produces if John Cardinal wanted too.
It is also technically feasible for a Plugin to synthesise a Media record of the 'cropped' image and use the Link/Note caption text as the Title. The difficulty is catering for all the options.
