* Importing Information to FH6 from Findmy past and for it to automatically update my tree on FH6

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Importing Information to FH6 from Findmy past and for it to automatically update my tree on FH6

Post by dolphinecosse » 11 Aug 2020 17:21

I use Find My Past a lot for my research and when I was building a tree on there the information I found immediately updated my tree. However now that I am using FH6 and the hints on it which include from FMP, the information appears to be stored but the tree not updated, am I doing something wrong or do I need to alter a setting or something. Any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the FHUG.

When using an FMP tree and finding records in FMP then everything is synchronised within one product.

The 'hints' in FH are not synchronised with FMP, and are little better than you performing a manual search within FMP.
You must satisfy yourself that the 'hint' is completely valid and then download the document details & image and add them as Source Citations within FH. (Please ask if you need advice on how to do that.)
You would use the same process for any online documents you found on any other online website.

So you are not doing anything wrong. That is the way PC genealogy programs usually work.

See how_to:internet_data_matches|> Internet Data Matches for further advice.

There are products that have much tighter integration with on-line search sites. For example, RootsMagic and Family Tree Maker both synchronise with Ancestry reasonably well. However, the producers of Family Historian have not chosen to go down that route. That can be mildly inconvenient if you also want to update an on-line tree, but it does keep you fully in charge of what you record and how you record it and avoids being sucked into requiring an ongoing subscription to access the fruits of your research.

Further to Mark's comments ~ the same problem afflicts RootsMagic and Family Tree Maker with regard to records from online websites other than Ancestry, i.e. FindMyPast, FamilySearch, etc.
There is no product that automatically synchronises with all the available online websites.
The danger of the automatic process is that you can easily overlook the necessary investigation needed to confirm the document is genuinely related to the person in your tree.

BTW: You don't need a subscription to create and manage online family trees on FindMyPast and Ancestry.
But I am not sure what happens to linked records that were added while you did have a subscription.

Anything you downloaded while you had a subscription is yours to keep forever of course, but my understanding for both Ancestry and FMP is that if you simply link to the source image (so there is no copy on your local PC), you lose access to it if you stop paying the sub.

That’s one of the reasons that I keep my on-line trees strictly “barebones” names, places and dates, with no uploaded media or sources. That all stays in FH, which is strictly the master copy.

Yes, I'm sure you are right, but such downloaded images can be uploaded to both Ancestry and FMP and incorporated into online family trees, which can continue to be managed even after the subscription has lapsed.

However, as you say, keeping it all in FH as the master is generally much better.

Up to a point - most downloaded images are still subject to copyright, either from the original producer or the site they were downloaded from, so uploading elsewhere is likely to be a breach of copyright.
