Export Source Records Only
Hi Forum
Is it possible to export Source records from one FH Project for use in another Project?. Just the Source records or a selection of Source records.
Many thanks
David

Re: Export Source Records Only
Yes, with caveats, as explained in Sources, Copying between projects (13517). Please read it carefully.
But it is all or nothing. You cannot select Source records. You would have to use other techniques to get a subset.
You need to think whether you also need linked Repository records, and Media records and their linked media files?
If the other Project needs all those Source records duplicating then maybe it should not be a separate Project?

Hi Mike
Thanks for the reply. The Sources I had in mind to copy are Researcher based Sources containing research documentation as MS - Word and PDF files. It would just save me time having to recreate in other Projects also containing the same families. I take your point about Links etc. Probably more trouble than it's worth.
Kind regards
David

So they are Source records linked to Media records linked to MS Word & PDF files?
I guess you know our advice against having multiple Projects containing the same families.

Yes Mike. I'm well aware of your 'frowns' on this - I split my main tree into two trees (ALL) and (Direct Ancestors Only) to allow for a controlled and focused Cleanup and Re-Assess. The full tree will be rebuilt when Release 7 comes about. Hopefully sometime this year

Sorry, I had forgotten about that strategy of yours.
So when you split, why didn't those Research Sources remain in both Projects?
Or are they something you have only recently added.

Re: Export Source Records Only
Hi Mike. The Source did remain in both Projects but I had lumped all research documents for 11 different families into one Source being the Professional Researcher who uncovered all the info. So this one Source was cited against many Individuals and contained documents that were unrelated to them. So I split that Source into 11 separate Sources and only attached the relevant documents to each. See the image attached for a visual explanation.

Re: Export Source Records Only
Yes, well that is the sort of update that illustrates why we advise against splitting.
So you will have to cope with the synchronisation of such changes across the two Projects.
Presumably, you want to migrate all those Sources to the other Project and retain the Citations that you have established for the new arrangement.
You could select all 11 Sources and run the Where Used Record Links Plugin to list all the Citations.
That would identify the Individual records involved.
So select a subset of those Individuals who also exist in the other Project and add them to a Named List.
Then File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File can Select that Named List and exclude everyone else and all Sources & Media not linked to those Individuals.
If too many extraneous Sources & Media are included then create a dummy Project from the GEDCOM and Delete anything not required.
Now you should be able to use File > Merge/Compare File to add that temporary GEDCOM into the other Project.
Take care about matching the details in the Individual records and Family records.

Re: Export Source Records Only
Thanks Mike - Much appreciated. I can cope with the sync issues I was just toying with the idea of minimising effort. Yes I accept it was a big leap to split, but I feel much more in control of the cleanup and recheck activities working with Direct Ancestors only for the near term. Essentially the main project containing ALL individuals is acting as more of a Repository than a working database. But obviously the more synced the better as it exists in Ancestry.co.uk and controlled by RootsMagic7 > A story for another day.
