* Selective Export of individuals with their families

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Selective Export of individuals with their families

Post by rhodian » 08 May 2020 08:03

I manage a community tree for a small Greek island.

I've recently been given a quite detailed GEDCOM export from someone and I'd like to join the 2 trees. I've been bitten in the past by naively importing the entire GEDCOM , my eye twitches just at the thought.

I started analysing differences and entering new/modified individual and family information but the magnitude of the work has thrown me, especially at the thought of having to create and allocate sources as well. I'm looking at how I can reduce the amount of time (and effort) that this will take and seeking advice on how I can selectively tag individuals and automatically include their families for GEDCOM export. Id like to have 2 lists one for new persons and their families and other for updates to persons already in my tree. Can they be imported into separate lists for me to subsequently add or merge manually, depending on the list they are in?

Thanks

What I would probably do if I was working this was is to create to flags and attach them to the people for your "lists" that way you can easily see and either on a diagram or a query who you have in your lists then you can use the export option.

If you have not already done so check out

Do not merge the new GEDCOM into your master Project for the reasons you have already discovered.

Use File > Project Window > New Project to create a temporary Project in which to review the data.
You may need to use a variety of techniques to 'sanitise' the data depending on which product it was exported from.
See how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian|> Importing to Family Historian that has advice for many popular products and generic advice that applies to most imports such as how_to:handling_unrecognised_data_fields|> Handling Uncategorised Data Fields (UDF).

You can distinguish groups of Individuals either by adding different Record Flags or by adding them to Named Lists as explained in how_to:create_work_in_progress_or_research_to_do_lists|> Planning and Tracking Your Research.

Once you know which Individuals you want to migrate into your master Project you can use the File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File command to produce a subset GEDCOM file. The command has a Select... option to choose Individuals either from a Named List or with Add using Query and the Has Flag Query.

Then you use the File > Merge/Compare File command to integrate that GEDCOM into your Project.
See glossary:merge_compare_files|> Merge/Compare File for details and to avoid common mistakes.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll review the suggested reading and formulate a process for exporting and importing/merging.

Much appreciated...
