* Will Uploading GEDCOM File Overwrite What I Have in my Current Project?

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Will Uploading GEDCOM File Overwrite What I Have in my Current Project?

Post by JennyE » 25 Apr 2020 19:46

Hello,
My ancestry subscription is about to run out and I would like to export the latest GEDCOM file from Ancestry and load it into Family Historian. I have done this once before when I first got Family Historian. My question is if I do this again, will the new GEDCOM file overwrite all of the data I currently have in Family Historian that is NOT on Ancestry? For example, I have added photos, many notes, and more people in Family Historian. I don't want to lose that if I upload the new GEDCOM file. Will that be the case?
Thanks!

Welcome to the FHUG Jenny. The short answer is No it won't simply overwrite, the data can be merged.

The first strategy to establish is which product holds your master Project database.
If you update two products like Ancestry and Family Historian (FH) independently you will regularly face this challenge.
So choose one as master and always migrate updates from that one to any other products.

Going back to when you migrated the GEDCOM from Ancestry to FH did you follow the import advice provided in the how_to:import_from_ancestry|> Import from Ancestry website page?
Unfortunately, each product has its own dialect of GEDCOM and although the important data is quite well represented, many details differ from product to product.
That page of import advice explains how to sort out those discrepancies between Ancestry and FH, and I suggest you review your Project in the light of that advice. If you need help with that then please ask.

Now when you come to migrate your GEDCOM from Ancestry to FH you will initially go through that same process to create a new Project in FH to sort out those discrepancies.
Having done that you can use the File > Merge/Compare File command to integrate this new Project into your master Project which semi-automatically synchronises matching records and allows you to merge data and keep whatever data you prefer from either Project.
The full process is explained in glossary:merge_compare_files|> Merge/Compare File and you may have questions about that.
But make sure you have suitable Backups and be prepared to make a couple of practice attempts until you become familiar with the technique.

Thank you for the reply. I will look over the Knowledge Base articles. I don't recall doing this two years ago when I started. At that point I didn't have anything to lose! :) I will definitely make a backup and give it a try.

I appreciate your quick reply and advice!

I have noted Jenny's query re transfer and merge her Tree on Ancestry into her Tree on FH. Does the same advice apply to doing the same from "Find my Past", bearing in mind there is some apparent connection between FH and "Find my Past" in that "Find my Past" hints are shown in FH. I have built up my Tree in "Find my Past" using their hint shown in FH, and also on my Tree with "Find my Past", and want to show those hints that I have accepted, in my FH Tree. Or is there an easier way of doing it, again bearing in mind the apparent arrangement between FH and "Find my Past" It's a pity that any accepted hints from "Find my Past" don't show automatically in one's Tree in FH, if desired.
Any advice appreciated.
Cheers,

Yes, migrating a GEDCOM from any product into FH follows exactly the same strategy.
Create a temporary Project in which to clean the data and then Merge that with your master Project.

The FH Focus Window 'hints' from FindMyPast are less integrated than on FindMyPast itself.
They are little more than shortcuts to finding records online in FindMyPast (or MyHeritage).
What you do with the records you find is exactly the same as if you had signed in to FindMyPast and manually searched for the records.
FindMyPast can automate the process more because their records and their tree are within one product.
