Importing from or exporting to another genealogy program. This is the place to ask.

Exporting to Rootsfinder

Post by ColeValleyGirl » 25 Feb 2019 09:37

Has anyone any experience exporting a Gedcom for import to Rootsfinder? Any advice on how to prepare it? (I'm happy with the privatisation issues, just want to work out what settings to use in the Export Gedcom plugin.

RootsFinder looks quite interesting.
I have run a few basic experiments and found that it exports GEDCOM in Draft 5.5.1 format, and does quite a good job of importing in that format, so try using Export Gedcom File mode (Sdr) Standard GEDCOM Draft 5.5.1.
It handles UTF-8 correctly, but does NOT upload Media so use (WIPE~ALL) mode.

Some attributes such as Physical Description and Marriage Count do not allow Date & Place, etc.

Standard items that it does NOT support that I have discovered so far include:
LDS Ordinances
Fact Age
Associated Persons
Alias
Submitter

However, most such data is still presented with its Tag & Value as a note.

Unsurprisingly, it does not support Fact Witnesses or Place Records.

When we have a clearer idea of what is supported, I can produce a Plugin mode for (RFT) RootsFinder Family Tree.

I have noticed that it does some weird things...
My data had a Census event dated 1912 for one person that also got added to the Profile of his wife and daughter, but it does not happen in all cases.

Give me a day or so to experiment -- I'm wrestling with LUA right now.

Sorry for not getting back to this sooner -- your recommendations seem to work OK. I finally used these settings (some of which are personal preferences and not necessary):

Thank you for that feedback Helen.
However, I cannot tell which settings are necessary, and which are personal preferences.
Some of the settings are a little mysterious.
e.g.
I found that Fact Age is not supported, but your Other Options tab does not tick the Husband/Wife/Person Age options to create a Fact Note, and yet your Label Options have non-default settings for Age labels.

Did you notice any 'unusual' data in addition to the cases I mentioned earlier?
