I was wondering if anyone knew of an application that would take a GEDCOM genealogy file and convert it to HTML format for viewing and publishing on the web. I'd like to have separate html files for each individual and perhaps additional files for other content as well. I know there are some tools out there but I was wondering if anyone used any tools and could advise on this. I'm not sure what format to look for such applications. They could be Python or php files that one can edit, or even JavaScript (maybe) or just executable files.

I use the create a web site in FH, take a look at http://www.wilkinsonransomefamilytree.co.uk/

I let FH create the pages but I have modified the main page and the CSS file, keeping them in a separate folder ready to copy in, and I replace a few lines of code in each file to tidy up the menu bar. I also run a script to add the search facility on the index page. My conclusion is that this is quite an efficient way of doing it.

You might like to take a look at Gedsite by John Cardinal. It has excellent web browser functionality and takes in all sorts of gedcom files. It's very configurable. John has also just released a new application called Gedcom Publisher for creating Family History eBooks.

There are many options for publishing your family tree on the Internet, but they can be narrowed down if you can give us some idea of your budget, i.e. how much you are prepared to spend.

As David suggests, there is the FH built in feature via Publish > Create a Website that creates HTML & CSS.

I presume you know that you will usually have to pay for your own domain and web space.

Alternatively, you can publish your family tree for free on Ancestry, FindMyPast, RootsWeb, ZoomPast, etc, etc.
This method exports a GEDCOM file and the online web site converts it to HTML, etc.

As suggested by Simon, see GedSite, and also TNG, that use an amalgam of the above two options, but are not free.
You export a GEDCOM file to those products that have tools to convert it to customised HTML, CSS, etc.
You will usually have to pay for your own domain and web space.

Whichever, option you choose there will be users here to advise with tips and techniques.

If personal website space with PHP and MySQL is available, another option could be webtrees - https://www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/

Rootsweb used to provide free webspace for uploaded genealogy sites. My public site (basic b, m and d) was there created with Second Site and Gedsite by John Cardinal as mentioned above.
The Rootsweb user web sites and other rootsweb public services such as mailing lists have been closed following a data security problem but are gradually coming back on line.
Rootsweb restored an initial group of sites and will be restoring sites at the request of the owners. That is, owners must request restoration,
I do not know if Rootsweb will again be offering web space for new sites.
But I have found it satisfactory and the names and dates were picked up by other researchers doing a google search.

I hope this information may be useful to others as I discovered it only when thinking I should move my online trees, and was exploring the subscription websites recommended by users of fh.

FYI: You do NOT need to subscribe to Ancestry or FindMyPast to use their FREE Family Tree features.
