I also think the Labelled Note e.g. [[ Sort Date: August 1900 ]] should act as a 'hard override' -- I think it's effect is more understandable that way.

OK, can we monitor its current way of working, and consider a change in the next Plugin version, depending on user feedback.

Out of interest, what effect does the Labelled Note have if the preceding date doesn't have a Date?

It is not so much the preceding fact Date that matters, but the preceding fact Sort Date, which always exists, and will be derived from the preceding fact that does have a Date, as explained in the Help & Advice.

On reflection, I think this should work from the beginning as it's intended to work long-term, so that people making data changes to use it (by adding labelled notes) get predictable results without re-entering data later.

Which means that they way it works now should be left, rather than chaning at a later date. (Less work for you as well).
