I think that advice is fine, Mike.
I also think the Labelled Note e.g. [[ Sort Date: August 1900 ]] should act as a 'hard override' -- I think it's effect is more understandable that way.

It is not so much the preceding fact Date that matters, but the preceding fact Sort Date, which always exists, and will be derived from the preceding fact that does have a Date, as explained in the Help & Advice.

On reflection, I think this should work from the beginning as it's intended to work long-term, so that people making data changes to use it (by adding labelled notes) get predictable results without re-entering data later.
Which means that they way it works now should be left, rather than chaning at a later date. (Less work for you as well).
