Importing from TMG
I am on a trial period. I hope to use Family Historian in conjunction with TNG. I need to transfer my records from TMG. I am testing with two surplus TMG projects. In both I am noticing a number of instances where the given name is missing in the Family History project. I can't see any logical reason for this. It is only on some records, but quite a lot.
Any ideas. I must have done something wrong but it's not obvious.
Thanks

Re: Importing from TMG
Have you checked how_to:import_from_tmg|How To Import From TMG
Are you using an older version of TMG? It's possible this is the cause?

Re: Importing from TMG
Welcome to the FHUG Brian.
Yes, the guide Jane mentions has details of the transfer options and how to upgrade an old TMG.
Some corrective processes are simplified with Plugins that are not available in the trial FH.
The Given name may have imported to one of the less visible FH fields. In the Property Box on the Main tab try the more... link to the right of the Name, or on the All tab try expanding the Name field.
Also, many users export from FH to TNG, again using a Plugin for best results, that support many features unique to TNG. We can give more details when you get to that stage.
As is often the case with these migration issues please give as much detail as possible. Exact versions of software. Exact commands used. Exact details of data, with screenshots where necessary, using Attachments tab below Post reply box.
Also take a look at how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

Re: Importing from TMG
Thanks
I had not read the knowledge Base fully. I will look again and cbeck out the Property Box suggestion.
I have TMG 8. I thought this was the final version. I imported the Project file following the notes, not a Gedcom.
I have also this morning been checking out Reports. In TMG there is a memo capacity on all tags which I have often used to record a source or alternative information or just a note. These notes seem to get reproduced in the Report. The option box does not appear to enable deletion of this Memo field. I shall look further in the guide.

Re: Importing from TMG
Brian, are you talking about deleting the TMG Memo/FH Note per Fact, when exporting to TNG?
That can be done via the File > Split Tree Helper command.
See how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia#export_to_website_without_sensitive_data|> Export to Website Without Sensitive Data.

Re: Importing from TMG
Thanks for the advice so far.
At the suggestion of the support people I downloaded a TMG9 trial version, loaded a file from my TMG 8 and then picked it up in FH. The result is the same ; a lot of first names are missed.
I have worked out how to not include the memos and I have otherwise learned a lot.
My next step is to try with the sample project in TMG9 and perhaps try a Gedcom file.

Re: Importing from TMG
Brian did you try running any of the TMG database repair tools before you imported. "Random" missing names are not something I believe others have reported. I know all names are sometimes missing if you try and import from very early versions of TMG

Re: Importing from TMG
Brian, did you look in the places I suggested?
The Given name may have imported to one of the less visible FH fields. In the Property Box on the Main tab try the more (+)... link to the right of the Name box, or on the All tab try expanding the Name field where there is a Given field.
I fear a Gedcom will import much worse than the direct import.
Can you give some screenshots of what you have in TNG and where you looked in FH.

Re: Importing from TMG
I know nothing about TNG - But I have imported several of my TMG projects into fh. But by no means all. My problems have not been the same as yours. But Mike has helped me and sometimes solved them.
It seems to me best to try and deal with your name issues one by one.
First to ask you whether the name fields from TMG 8 come into TMG 9 correctly?
Are you saying that if you use fh to directly open and import the TMG 9 Sample project that names are still missing?
If I were in your situation I would then export a GEDCOM from your own project in TMG 9 (NOT to import into fh) and then open that file using Notepad to look and see how the missing Name fields are labelled, cut and paste the text and then let Mike know here.
Because it sounds as if you are using the trial free version of both TMG and of fh - neither of which offer all the facilities, plug ins etc of the full paid for versions. And it means that unlike me you are doing the import without Mike's plug ins to adjust fields and data after import.
Do you have the TMG utilities by John Cardinal? That would enable you to do similar tasks in TMG before export.
Whatever you do do not import to fh via Gedcom.

Re: Importing from TMG
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Importing the Sample project from both TMG 8 and 9 has worked.
I think I may have originally created a faulty TMG 8 project which I have been testing in FH. I think this was originally created as a subset of a larger Project which I still have. The next step is to import this project into FH.

Re: Importing from TMG
I have checked more on the property box.
Importing the Sample projects from both TMG8 and 9 works.
Importing my main file from TMG 8 still gives me missing Given names. As I will need to go through my data on families I am resigned to correcting the missing names as I go.
The problem seems to be with TMG so I will soldier on. I am learning FH in the process.
Thanks

Re: Importing from TMG
I have done a small query which you might find useful, listing the records with missing given names.

Brian, for the third time of asking, did you look in the places I suggested?
The Given name may have imported to one of the less visible FH fields. In the Property Box on the Main tab try the more (+)... link to the right of the Name box, or on the All tab try expanding the Name field where there is a Given field, or lower down is there a field with a leading star bullet?
When you say the TMG Given names are missing, do you mean nothing is shown prior to the Surname in the Focus Window and Main tab Name field of the Property Box?
