* Edit gedcom tags/fields

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Edit gedcom tags/fields

Post by Klaus Yde » 23 Nov 2016 08:45

I was looking for a method or a program that could edit the tags/fields of a gedcom file. I would as an example like to make a gedcom file with only name, gender, birth and dead tags.

As I see it FH and the gedcom export plug in doesn't have this ability. I have also searched the net for a program that could strip a gedcom file for specific tags, but with no luck.

Has anyone a solution? It can of cause be done with Notepad++, but i would take some time for an ordinary gedcom file with +500 records ;)

Kind regards

You can do this it just takes two stages.

First export using the standard Family Historian export: File>Import/Export>Export>GEDCOM File
and exclude all the record types you want to skip, for example Media, Sources, etc, and select all the people you want to export.

When it finishes take the option to open the exported file.
Next go to File>Split Tree Helper and set up as shown:
