Tag (Fact) import from TMG

Having imported my data from TMG and had a play around I am relatively happy with the end result. One thing I have noticed is some custom Tags have not imported as an equivalent Custom Fact. For example I had set up a Tag called Census Absence to record when someone could not be found in a census so it could have its own sentence for narratives. These however have imported as Census Facts, Census Absence does not appear in the Fact Type list. I have created a Fact Type called Census Absence with its own sentence but cannot seem to be able in an individuals fact list to change the fact type, seemingly I have to add a custom Fact, copy across the detail then delete the imported Fact. I'm sure there must be a better way, so I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Addendum

Other custom Tags have imported as undefined facts eg Wounded, Banns and War Memorial. if I set up a Custom Fact Type of the same name all becomes well with out any other effort. Perhaps Census Absence is simply because of the word Census. Can i change the Fact allocation over easily for these selected facts?

Yes, custom Tags should import with identical names in FH, but there will be no Fact Types definition as FH cannot guess what parameters to use, especially the Sentence Template.

Your Census Absence example is an anomaly that should be reported to Calico Pie.
But first check the TMG tag definition. Is it perhaps mapped to the Gedcom CENSus tag?
That would explain the anomaly, and if adjusted should import as other custom Tags.

To alter the erroneous Census events to Census Absence use the Change Any Fact Tag Plugin.
The difficulty will be differentiating between genuine Census events and those that need changing.
You may have to confirm each one manually.
If you help with using the Plugin then please ask.

Thank you, I was beginning to think that Plug In was the answer. Plug Ins being a new concept to TMG users.

I have one other question. In TMG an Event (Fact) had a date and a sort date field. This enabled undated events to appear in the right place. Looking at FH this concept doesn't appear and I don't seem to be able to move undated facts using the move up / move down buttons into the right place, although they do move a few places then the arrows grey out. I have attached an example screen shot. His war memorial (my added custom fact to replicate what was in TMG) entries and medals were given a sort date after his death so they looked right.

Before resorting to the Plugin check the TMG tag definition for your Census Absence custom Tag.
If it is defined as translating to the Gedcom standard Census Event CENS tag, then the FH import is only obeying those instructions. Remove that CENS tag so it is the same as your other custom Tags, then it will import just like them.

It is true FH has no sort date field, but the Fact Types definition does have a Normal Time Frame setting. Set your War Memorial Facts to Post-Death and they will always be listed after the Death Event. Use this for other custom Facts to establish their position relative to Birth, Marriage, and Death events.

dewilkinson - as Mike says, check the TMG Tag Definitions.

I moved from TMG to FH around a year ago but spent three months before that running Imports, checking results, modifying settings in TMG and running imports again before I made the "final" switch. I certainly had to make a number of Tag definition changes in the "GEDCOM Export As" values, particularly where I had defined Tags based on other Tags - when I created the Tags in TMG I did not fully understand (or worry?) particularly about the Gedcom Export values.

In your previous posting Address import from TMG V8.08 (14306) I gave several [kb]|[/kb] links that should be helpful as a new migrant from TMG. Did you follow them up?

BTW: If you are still using the FH 30-day Trial version, then Plugins are NOT supported.

Mike,

Indeed I have have a look at lot of entries on the forum and knowledge base.

I am still using the free trial but am reaching a conclusion that FH is going to be fine, so suspect I will buy very soon and have a go with a plug-in. Spending my time playing with diagrams etc and checking all the bespoke Tags created in TMG, only Census Absence has caused a serious issue, and as you suggested that was because it had the Census GEDCOM identifier. Not something I considered when setting these up many years ago.

Like any change of software there are pluses and minuses, but FH has more pluses and understanding the conceptual differences takes time. A big minus though seems to be lack of a way of sourcing and surety values for parent child relationships and I note the correspondence there has been on that.

If you change the TMG Tag definition for Census Absence it will import OK as a custom fact.

Did you see the new how_to:recording_credibility_of_family_relationships|> Recording Credibility of Family Relationships that offers several ways of entering sources and surety values for parent child relationships.
