* Exporting a family from my data

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Exporting a family from my data

Post by peterbel » 03 Oct 2016 16:49

I want to share some of my FH data with a relative who also runs FH.
I have tried exporting to a GEDCOM by selecting a family member as a root and then used the add query to include all decendants. I also wanted to imbed all the media files and selected that.
When I run this I get "An unknown error has occured" and the action closes.
I then validated my Gedcom, it showed no errors.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

Rather than embed the Media, I suggest you create another Project from your exported Gedcom, and then perform a Full Backup that you can send to your relation.

The technique is explained in how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with Multimedia.

Does the error arise as soon as you click OK before the Save As file dialogue opens?
Have you tried other Selection options?
Are any of the Media files open in another program?

If you always get the error whatever you try then contact Calico Pie for help.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

I OK'd the selection popup and then the warning about a large file with imbeded media. Selected the folder and used the same named file as my first attempt. After a short pause the error came up.
I have tried one other selection, same result.
No media files were open with other programs.

I wondered if the problem might related to the media files so I am now checking the are all correctly linked. I have in the past reorganised my media into documents, media and certificates (in Explorer, old habits die hard!) so it is possible some links are broken.

I will read the links you have given but is there a known reason why my attempt errored?

I have gone through all the media files and corrected some links including changing ones which were to my NAS and not the local hard drive. (the files are there but it is my duplicate copy of all my family history files).

I ran the export again, with imbeded media, and it did not error.

Will the exported file work as a standalone file complete with media? I have tried testing it but I am not sure.

Thanks again.

In original Project review your Media file links using Tools > External File Links and look for X marks indicating broken links.

It is strongly advised that all Media files are within the Project's Media folder using relative file links. Please ask if you need further advice about this.

The Gedcom with embedded Media should be OK. To check then move to another folder and open with FH. Also temporarily move or rename one of original Media files, and check Gedcom will open in FH and still display Media image.

It will probably be a large Gedcom file that will need to be sent on a CD/DVD.
