I am a TMG user. I recently purchased FH 6 in order to familiarize myself with it. I've used the FH direct import feature to test the transfer of my TMG data into FH. As described in the FH documentation, there are a few adjustments to be made but overall I'm happy with the quality of the imported data.

As my first posted question to this forum I have a rather banal question. I've performed a direct import of my data several times and it seems to me there is an anomaly in the Record Ids assigned by FH to the imported Source records. In every import I've tried, the Record Ids for the imported Individuals, Families, Repositories, Media, and Places always start at number 1, whereas the Record Ids for my imported Sources (there are 771 of them) always start at number 1024, ascending to 1794 I've searched the forum and have not seen anyone else mention this unusual numbering.

Why do the Record Ids of the imported Source records not start at 1 like those of the other record types ? Is this by design ? This numbering is not causing any problem. I'm asking mostly out of curiosity, but also because I may want to go ahead and assign some of the unused Source Record Ids in 1 to 1023 range if there is no overriding technical reason for leaving them unused.

The numbering assigned by FH often depends on the Record Id numbering in the imported data.
If FH can identify Record Id numbers in the imported records it will use them, but if not it starts at 1.
See glossary:record_types_and_record_id|> Record Types and Record Id.

The Tools > Record Identifiers feature mentioned there allows renumbering, but it is difficult to choose arbitrary Record Id and usually not worth the effort. If you want some form of personalised numbering use the Custom Id field.

Because it causes no problems there is no reason for continued examination of the anomaly. For completeness I'll simply add the following.

My TMG project has 758 sources (I mistakenly reported 771 in my original post). All 758 sources are successfully imported by FH Direct Import. In TMG, the sources are numbered, with lowest Record Number being 1 and highest Record Number is 5111. In other words in my TMG project the range of Source Record Numbers is large but sparsely populated, the result of my reserving specific sub-ranges for specific source types. FH Direct Import does not retain my TMG sources record number scheme. For whatever reason for the imported project it assigns 1024 as lowest Source Record Id and ascends in increments of 1. There is an additional wrinkle. The highest assigned Source Record Id is 1794, not 1781, because 13 of the numbers in the 1024 to 1794 range are skipped for some reason.

If I do decide to go with FH to replace TMG, I may decide to change the Record Ids using Tools>Record Identifers and Custom Id as intermediary.

From memory I think that it is possible to renumber the sources in TMG reasonably easily. Perhaps by doing that first you will then get sequential numbers starting from 1 in FH when importing the file.

It is trivial to renumber records from 1 in FH.

Rather than use Record Id or Custom Id number ranges to identify Source types, in FH there is the Source Type field that is designated for that purpose and you can choose whatever type names you wish.
