* TMG import - problem with names

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

TMG import - problem with names

Post by cleonard47 » 29 Dec 2015 15:04

I have imported my TMG data into Family Historian using the direct method.
Satisfied with the results but I am having a problem with names: the given name is followed with the suffix and then the surname.
Is there a way to correct this?

Welcome to the FHUG.
That is not a problem that I ever recall being raised before with TMG imports.

Could you please supply a bit more detail.
Where exactly are you viewing the problem in FH displays?

Is it the Name field of the Individual Property Box?
If so, I guess it looks like: Given Suffix /Surname/
and you want it to be like: Given /Surname/ Suffix

What happens when an Individual has multiple Given names and no Suffix?
i.e. Given1 Given2 /Surname/

How have you defined those Names in TMG?
It may be something that needs correcting in FH direct import.

Once it is clear what needs adjusting, then it probably can be automated with a Plugin.

Hello,

I am viewing this in the main focus window (see attached file). Also in the name field of the individual property box.

Yes it looks like: Given Suffix /Surname/ and I want it to be like: Given /Surname/ Suffix

What happens when an Individual has multiple Given names and no Suffix? I have not come into a problem. TMG uses "name variation".

Also, does FH offer other options instead of the slash / to separate names ? A comma would look nicer :)

FH adheres 100% to the GEDCOM standard, which demands that Surnames are delimited by / so comma is not an option, but remember the / are only shown in the Property Box and Records Window. When Reports and Diagrams are produced they are not shown.

On the strict understanding that every Individual has a Suffix preceeding their /Surname/ then the following steps will fix it:
  1. Use Tools > Plugins > Plugin Store to download/install Search and Replace Plugin
  2. In that Tools > Plugins window select and Run that Plugin
  3. In its Search: box enter ^(.+) (.+) (/.-/)$ (use Copy & Ctrl-V to Paste)
  4. In its Replace: box enter %1 %3 %2 (use Copy & Ctrl-V to Paste)
  5. Select LUA Pattern Mode top right
  6. In Basic Filters clear all except Individual Names, Prefix, Suffix, Given, etc
  7. Click the Search & Replace button below
  8. In next window check Current Value against Replacement Value and if OK click Replace
  9. When happy all is OK then clear Confirm every item found and click Replace
  10. When complete it will produce a Result Set of all changes with new surnames in CAPITALS
  11. If anything is unsatisfactory use Edit > Undo Plugin Updates before closing FH to reverse all changes

I understand about the slash.
No problem installing your plug in but it does not work in the trial version of FH.
I do not mind buying it now but when you write "On the strict understanding that every Individual has a Suffix preceeding their /Surname/..." this is not clear to me: only a minority of my individuals have a suffix so what will happen when I run the plugin?

Yes, Plugins are the one feature not supported in trial version.

The Search and Replace relies on at least two forenames separated by space chars prior to the /Surname/.
i.e.
Given Suffix /Surname/

That is why I asked about multiple Given names, as the following will also match the Search:
Given Given /Surname/

So nothing can differentiate those two cases except you, unless the Suffix names have some unique characteristics to differentiate them from Given names.

Otherwise, when you run the Plugin you will have to confirm Replace or Skip each name depending on whether a Suffix has been found or not.

Just to fully explain FH's treatment of the TMG name parts on direct import, the facts are:
1. TMG has 9 possible name components (Title, Prefix, GivenName, PreSurname, Surname, Suffix, Othername, SortSurname, SortGiven)
2. FH ignores 5 of these (Prefix, Othername, Presurname, SortSurname, SortGiven)
3. FH mis-handles 2 of these (Title, Suffix)

So a TMG person named as 'Title Given Surname Suffix' (a not uncommon thing to want to do) becomes in FH 'Given (Title) Suffix Surname' - which is rubbish, as you have found.

I purchased a licence in order to try search and replace. Unfortunately I get an error message.

@cleonard47 - As the message says, you have accidentally included a newline character in either the Search or the Replace box. If you can position the cursor on the 2nd line below the 1st line in either box, then delete the newline character at the end of the 1st line.

@DonF - Have you reported that problem to Calico Pie via their Support Overview + Contact Support form?

Thanks a lot everyone, everything seems to run smoothly since performing the "search and replace".
Now I can start playing with FH :)
A great support group!

Yes Mike - problem has been reported. But given 6.1 only picked up 2 of the last 17 issues I've reported, I have no expectation of any quick fix....
