* Transfer of media by gedcom

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Transfer of media by gedcom

Post by Smith70 » 14 Dec 2015 23:32

If I transfer from by gedcom from Family Tree Maker to Family Historian will all my media be transferred? I know that in the past it was not possible to transfer media by gedcom and it would have to be manually entered.

It depends which version of FTM you have. From FTM 2012 onwards image data is exported. Then when you create a new project in FH and import your Gedcom there is an option to copy any linked multimedia files into the new project folder.
See this entry in the FH knowledge base for further guidance: how_to:import_from_family_tree_maker|> Import from Family Tree Maker (FTM)

See related threads:

Importing Images from FTM2014 (13090)

I also understand that Calico Pie are considering a direct import option to avoid the Gedcom problems.

Can anyone confirm the consideration by Calico Pie to build a direct import option from FTM to FH6. I have been using FTM along with Ancestry for some time. FH is much better at display, edit and manipulation functions, but FTM provides a direct sync capability - not perfect, but it saves a lot of hassle.
I was very disappointed (furious!) that Ancestry are to bin FTM in a few months, and I will have to import several large trees from FTM 2014 into FH6. On the other hand, I look forward to using FH in earnest again.
Reading the forum, it seems the task is difficult and daunting, and I suspect a good many erstwhile Ancestry/FTM users will be looking for an easier, more reliable solution. I certainly will, and would be willing to vote with my wallet, if necessary, considering the many hours/days/weeks the task would otherwise take.

Consideration was posted in the [FHU] Mailing List by Simon Orde in Integration with Ancestry on Fri, 11 Dec 2015.

I did not catch that link, pity it did not come to FHUG (or did I miss that too!), I for 1 will email requesting integration with FH AND releasing the API so that others can "play with it", as I use Ancestry both for research and tree (copy) display, and up until now had to create a new tree each time I update. Even Microsoft now seem to accept that by opening up their product details, more people will want to play with them-virtuous circle.

from what I can gather these are the email addresses from the rootsweb thread (see Mikes link above to the thread), try them all:

support@ancestry.com
support@ancestry.co.uk
http://help.ancestry.com/app/ask

plus regional variations such as:
http://ancestryuk.custhelp.com/app/ask (UK)
http://ancestryau.custhelp.com/app/ask (Australia)
http://ancestryca.custhelp.com/app/ask (Canada)

and last but not least, Kendall Hulet (Senior Vice President of Product Management)

Jim, do you not subscribe to the [FHU] Mailing List at RootsWeb?

yes, thanks mike, but in USA at present, so I tend to "speed" read at present, also I find FHUG so much "easier" than Rootsweb, but then Rootsweb has served me very well in the past, especially on TMG.

For anyone interested, this was my slant on the issue which I have emailed to the above addresses. Although Ancestry might not seem to be the genealogical loving company that it was since venture capitalists and takeovers etc (i.e. money is probably the ONLY motivator now), it still has a lot to offer, so if it can be steered to being more useful in the future, all the better. As an aside I have never been a serious user of the later versions of FTM (after FTM16 I think), mainly because of the disastrous start and lack of portability.
No FTM, No problem, just open up your API and/or create a good export/import solution.

Dear Ancestry,

Whilst I am disappointed that you are discontinuing Family Tree Maker, you could make this an opportunity to increase the appeal of 2 of your core products, the Ancestry database, and your Ancestry Trees.

Please try to make your Ancestry Trees more compatible with other products. I can think of 3 'relatively' easy ways:

1. Ancestry Trees create an export file(s), ideally GEDCOM based, but not necessarily, that contained all the information on my Ancestry Tree(s) (attachments, pictures etc) and allow it to be amended, say on the desktop, and then passed back to Ancestry Trees.

2. Probably better in the long run - Allow GEDCOM + pictures/attachments to upload to Ancestry Trees, and download similar.

3. Open up your API (I think that is the word) so that other people/programs can interface with it. I for instance use Family Historian, but would be very upset if you just let only 1 other vendor interface with Ancestry Trees.

If Google Maps and other mainstream vendors can open up their APIs etc, why not you. Just think of all the extra uses that the core Google Maps can be put to because others can interface with it.

Yours

Just sticking my nose in here because I purchased FTM2014 (after the announcement) to help with checking whether I have actually downloaded all of the (in Ancestry-speak) "citation media" in my online Ancestry trees, especially since Ancestry bars you from looking at the images if your subscription lapses.

I had previously imported my Ancestry-exported GEDCOMs into Family Historian to get a quick look at what happens to them, without making any attempt to fix the glitches. While doing so, I discovered that there is a link to the record detail page in the exported GEDCOM. What I'd like to do is extract these and make a log so I can check off all the sources as I re-enter them into a clean FH6 database.

The plan for 2016 is to study the records by groups, so I can do better follow-ups on clues found in the records. For an example of the kind of thing I'm talking about see these pages at the US National Archives (NARA):

Clues in Census Records, 1790-1840
Clues in Census Records, 1850-1940

Working on all the 1920 Census records as a batch will make it easier to remember to add individuals to a Named List if I need to search for their naturalization papers.

I have recently bought Family Historian 5 and have managed to transfer my media which was mainly census images, from Family Treemaker 14. It did not work initially, but I got some good advice from reading this website, about downloading the free upgrade from FH 5 to FH 5.0.11.It then worked well.Though having worked, manually on my tree for years mainly via Ancestry,I have minimal computer skills,so am very grateful for the advice in this forum.Thank you.
