* TMG import - what doesn't work?

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

TMG import - what doesn't work?

Post by kidhazy » 01 Dec 2015 11:20

I've just starting looking at moving from TMG V9 to Family Historian V6.

I've downloaded the FH V6 trial edition and have done an import of my TMG project.

I've noticed a few things that haven't imported directly (and may be because they're not supported in FH)

eg.
Father-God - converted my God-daughter into a biological daughter.
Military (Milit-Begin/Milit-End) appear to be converted to a generic event with a sentence structure "He experienced Milit-Begin on 14 August ..."
Illness - also appears to be converted to a generic event
Name-var I use this in TMG where there are variations in name spellings and document details in the TMG memo field. FH appears to import the name variations, but I can't see that it has imported the memo info.

Has anyone compiled a list of the various TMG tags that need to be checked after an import to either correct or update that information?

Cheers.

While you're waiting for a more complete reply from a user with more knowledge than me, you might find the follwing useful, if you've not already seen it: how_to:import_from_tmg|Import from The Master Genealogist (TMG)

It is also possible that the current licensed version of FH i.e. 6.0.4 has significant improvements over the trial version, and a further free (for licensed users) update is expected within a few weeks. Plus, the licensed versions include the use of various relevant Plugins.

As Peter says, check the Knowledge Base advice, BUT some of the fixes require Plugins and the FH Trial version excludes Plugin support. See footnote to FH 6 30 Day Free Trial.

However, the FH Trial version is 6.0.4 with the latest TMG import capabilities.

See also how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

God-Father - God-daughter type relationships are not supported.
Either retain the direct link and add Notes to describe the relationship, or break that link and use the Fact Witness feature similar to TMG to add the God-father as a Witness to the Baptism/Christening Event of the God-daughter.

Military (Milit-Begin/Milit-End) and Illness appear as a generic event.
FH has recognised them as Custom Facts (not part of the GEDCOM Standard).
The Tools > Fact Types command allows them to be defined within FH and adjust the Sentence Template so it can say "He began Military service on 14 August ...", etc. You need to learn how to use this feature in due course.

Name-var Memo may have imported but possibly in a slightly obscured position.
Open the Property Box of the Individual with these variant Names.
Select the All tab top right, and investigate the [+] Name tags - there should be more than one.
Click the [+] against them to expand the details - there may be a Note holding your memo text.

As a fairly recent convert from TMG perhaps it might be helpful if I let you know my experience. My TMG data was in fairly simple format so the conversion went without a hitch. However the one thing that I did have to rethink was the way I had recorded census information particularly as I wanted to make use of the splendid Ancestral Sources program. I am now a convert to Method 1 (see the notes that come with Ancestral Sources),which is a completely different way of looking at the way sources are recorded as compared to TMG.
One area that might cause you some difficulty is if you have split sentences, but that did not apply to me. There is plenty of discussion in this forum and if you place TMG in the search at the top of this page you will get a host of relevant items. I would concentrate on the most recent ones as many of the queries raised earlier were dealt with in the update to 6.0.4.

Thank you all for your speedy responses.

It definitely shows there's a lot to learn in FH - some reading for me.

tatewise - thanks for your info on the custom facts (got me looking at FactSets as well). Is there a way to convert existing Generic Events into a custom fact so I don't have to reenter the information?

Also, with regards to the Name-var memo - I couldn't see it in the All tab (may be one of the import options). But I couldn't see how (even if I manually added a note) to have it printed out within a narrative report. As an example in TMG I had a memo of "when she was born, but never used this surname after she was adopted" - this would print out as "Olive Smith was also known as Olive Walsh when she was born, but never used this surname after she was adopted."
Is there a way in FH to augment some of the fact sentence structures to include notes or memos?

(These alternative names also got me looking at the Married Name (Name-Marr) tag in TMG which also doesn't appear to neatly import into FH)

Generic Events to Custom Facts

Yes, use Tools > Fact Sets, tick the Show Hidden option, and expand the dialogue window.
Then click on the Visible column heading to sort it, and scroll to the bottom of window.
Your generic events are listed there, but with Fact Set <none> and Visible <undefined>.
That is explained via the Help button, and the Work with Fact Sets advice.

Select a Label and click the Edit button, then OK the create a definition warning.
In the Fact Definition dialogue, click the Help button for advice.
This is where you adjust various settings including the Narrative Sentence Template.
You will be back with more questions...

Name-var Memo

Usually fields that are only accessible on the All tab are not well supported in Reports, etc.

I suspect there are various solutions, but they mostly involve using Standard &/or Custom Facts.
Standard Facts: Birth Event and Adoption Event
Custom Attribute: Also Known As with its value = Name-var
The sentence Template can use a range of Template Codes and Expressions to incorporate data from the Fact and elsewhere. Also if the default Template is not quite suitable then it can be edited selectively in each Fact.

Name-Marr

I suspect a similar solution using Facts and sentence Templates is the way to go.
