* New Project from TMG
New Project from TMG
Hello.
I am migrating from TMG and have the trial version as I decide which replacement program I would like to purchase.
I successfully imported a gedcom of my TMG data to Family Historian, but it shows only as a Gedcom file and not as a project. I tried to create a new empty project with myself as starting person, but I got a message "Unable to create project folder."
How do I convert a Gedcom to a project or create a blank project for data entry and import a Gedcom?
Thank you.
Dick Norwood

Re: New Project from TMG
Hello Dick, welcome to FHUG.
By what method did you import your GEDCOM to FH? Did you start with the Project window, then click New Project, then Import a GEDCOM file?
As you are coming from TMG you may find this article in the Knowledge Base useful, if you have not already seen it:
how_to:import_from_tmg|> Import from The Master Genealogist (TMG)
There are a number of users of FH who migrated from TMG so if you have any specific problems ask here and I'm sure someone will be able to help.

Hi Lorna,
Thank you for replying.
Yes, that's exactly how I imported the Gedcom. However, I also used a gedcom downloaded from Ancestry.com, so I have tried different sources for my transfer. Another program was able to import TMG directly, so I created a gedcom from that program as well.
I will take a look at the link you provided.
I just don't understand why I can sometimes transfer data and other times not, why I cannot create a new blank project, and why transferred Gedcoms don't become projects with the proper extension.

Re: New Project from TMG
Hi Dick.
I must admit I am a little confused by your descriptions.
Your first posting talks about showing "as a Gedcom file and not as a project" and that trying to create a Project gave "Unable to create project folder".
Your second posting says you used "exactly" Lorna's method File > Project Window > New Project > Import a GEDCOM file which can only create a Project.
BTW: Unlike TMG, a GEDCOM is not converted to a Project, but rather it is embedded with a Project folder structure.
See how_to:v4:understanding_projects|> Understanding Projects.
When you use File > Project Window what is displayed.
Under Family Historian Projects it should list Family Historian Sample Project.
Against Location: it should say My Documents\Family Historian Projects.
Is there any reason why that folder might not be acceptable in your system?
e.g. Have you moved your default Documents folder to a different disk drive?
Which Windows version are you using?
Furthermore, as the link Lorna offered suggests, it is better to import the TMG project file directly into FH rather than use the GEDCOM route.

Re: New Project from TMG
Hi Mike,
Thank you for your reply. I am sure the confusion is because I am still ignorant of the ways of discussing Family Historian. After reading your response, I created a folder on my Desktop for Family Historian Projects. I then imported my main project from TMG directly to FH, indicating that I wanted it stored in the new Desktop folder, and lo and behold, it worked. I guess the location of the FH Projects folder in "My Documents" was somehow inaccessible to the program.
I am using Windows 10, which is mainly why I am looking at alternatives to TMG. Suddenly, TMG would not work with Windows 10 on my computer.
You've been very kind.
If I have any more questions as I get to know Family Historian, I will be back.
Best,
Dick

Re: New Project from TMG
I am pleased you have made some positive progress, Dick.
With a little more investigation I'm sure we can resolve the Family Historian Projects folder problems, as the Desktop is not the ideal location.
As a newcomer may I suggest you start with the how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and explore further topics from there.

Re: New Project from TMG
Dick,
I'm not sure why you are having any problems running TMG on Wondows 10 - it runs fine in Win10 (better in some respects) and in fact runs across a broader range of Windows versions than most genie programs.
Some people have found they have to TMG via 'run as administrator' for Win10, but I have not.
However, if you do decide to switch to FH, absolutely forget GEDCOM and do direct imports - the results will be much better.

Re: New Project from TMG
Thank you, Don.
Interestingly enough, after speaking with all of you and someone at TMG who also recommended running the program as administrator, I right clicked on my shortcut TMG icon and found the "run as administrator" option. When I clicked on it, TMG came up and ran without any glitches, so I am back to evaluating other programs but not in a panic over TMG anymore. Previously, when I tried to run TMG as administrator, I couldn't find the option.
Direct import of TMG to FH did finally work when I relocated the FH folder.
Best,
Dick

Re: New Project from TMG
Don,
I was a little hasty. I can get into TMG as administrator, but I cannot add data; I can only navigate through the database and read. I don't know how to fix that problem.
I like Windows 10 very much apart from this inconvenience.
Thanks again,
Dick

Re: New Project from TMG
I wonder if your Win 10 upgrade has upset the access permissions on files similar to the later postings in Windows 10 (12790).
This would also explain the problem with FH access to Family Historian Projects folder.
This http://www.tenforums.com/general-discus ... older.html and this http://www.tenforums.com/user-accounts- ... count.html suggest similar solutions, although some threads say it may not work.

Re: New Project from TMG
Thank you so much, Mike. I have followed the steps recommended, and now TMG allows me to edit. I did have to unlock the full version again, even though I had already done so. We shall see if I have to do it again each time.
I have a feeling that my Bitdefender antivirus software is interfering with some things, but now that I know it, I can direct it to unblock programs I want to use. That's another issue.
I'm very grateful for all the help.
