Just installed FH v6 on a Win 8.1 machine. Imported GEDCOM file from FTM2014 as a new Project None of the Media seem to work ... get error msg: "Unable to load object. Object type not recognized" for the files that are PDF or HTM. Files that are JPG generate the error "File not found." So how to I get the media to work with FH6?

I'm sure others will have a better idea of this, but in the meantime have you tried:
Import from Family Tree Maker (FTM)
I know media is often an issue with an import.

Re: Unable to load object... after GEDCOM import from FTM
Welcome to the FHUG Bob. Yes, Media import is often a problem between many products.
What has happened is the Media file paths in the GEDCOM file do not refer to your actual FTM Media locations.
Use the FH V6 command Tools > External File Links to see where it expects all the Media files should be located.
How does this compare with where your actual FTM Media is located?
The solution requires those two locations to be reconciled. So post the discrepancies here and we will advise the best solution.

Mike
I looked at the File List and with over 400 media links thought it problematic. So I decided to start from scratch.
I resaved another GEDCOM file from FTM with three differences: I used ANSI (might as well do it right), I saved the file to its final destination (never moved it), and I gave it a new name. I then created a new Project in FH and imported the new GEDCOM. Worked great, mostly.
The JPG files work fine, however, the PDF and HTM files won't load. I tried dragging one of my favorite PDF files from my PC into the media area but no luck. I also tried to drag and drop the same file but in DOC, RTF, and TXT formats. In all cases the response was that FH can't handle the file type.
What am I missing? It would be very disappointing if FH can't handle DOC and PDF files. Any thoughts?

Bob, FH does 'handle' all file type, it just doesn't display them internally, but relies on an 'external' reader/viewer.
