* Problem with note field truncating with FTM import

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Problem with note field truncating with FTM import

Post by Bundle » 27 Jun 2015 19:33

I have been trying out both Ancestry and FamilyTreeMaker 2014 to make gedcom imports into FH. The only downside so far with the FTM import has been with my note fields getting chopped off. Up until now I have entered all my data into an Ancestry tree, then used FamilyTreeMaker so that I could download all images. I typically add two or three lines of text under entries such as census or occupation. This is converted to a note in FH, which is fine, except that it chops it off in the middle. The remainder of the note appears on the ALL tab in the property box prefixed by "CONC' lines. At least it is all still there. Is there any alternative to a long session of cutting and pasting the text back into the Note field?

With the FH tree using the Ancestry gedcom: Ancestry has not truncated the notes at all. It is all intact.
Because the FTM gedcom did bring all my images across without not too much problem, it would be good to stick with it.

Any suggestions appreciated. I am still finding my way around and have looked at a lot of the Knowledge Base articles but not spotted the truncating problem.

I will attempt to attach an image of the All tab.

Nicola

It looks like FTM is creating the Gedcom file incorrectly for Notes.
For your example it should look like:

2 NOTE High Street...
3 CONC William Gardener...
3 CONC daughter Mary...

But FTM is producing:

2 NOTE High Street...
2 CONC William Gardener...
2 CONC daughter Mary...

If you are adept at using a plain text editor such as Windows Notepad then they can be corrected with some global Replace commands on your Gedcom file.
If the only problem Notes are associated with Facts then just Edit > Replace every 2 CONC with 3 CONC but ensure you tick Match case and include the space character after CONC in both Find and Replace boxes.

If however various different types of Notes are affected then start by converting say 4 CONC into 5 CONC, then 3 CONC into 4 CONC, 2 CONC into 3 CONC, and finally 1 CONC into 2 CONC.

Just providing a bit more feedback. Mike is right, I did see the pattern as outlined in his reply.
We did an experiment to see how gedcom files were handled exporting from both Ancestry and FTM and what happened after importing to FH. The following probate record illustrates the problem.

Ancestry Original
1 PROB Maclean Florence of The Chantry Ross Herefordshire (wife of Montague Francis Maclean) died 24th March 1947 Probate London 6 August to the said Montague Francis Maclean retired colliery director John Francis Maclean national coal board official and Gerald M

Your suggestion about altering 2 CONC to 3 CONC worked and I have so far just amended a couple of individual records. My husband is working on a plug-in to make these edits but there's still a way to go. He said he will post in the plug-in forum when he understands what his problems are!!

Thanks again.
