Hi hope you can help.
I have just installed my first copy of FH6 and downloaded a GEDCOM from Ancestry which I have then uploaded onto FH6.
My issue is that no photos have appeared and all links are in red and have a x on external links list.
all and any help would be much appreciated
Karen

Karen,
That's simply because downloading a Gedcom from Ancestry doesn't actually download any images.
The next question should probably be: What images do you need? Are these images from the Ancestry Database(s) supporting the facts in your Tree or images you already have on your computer that you uploaded to your tree?

Welcome to the FHUG Karen.
As a newcomer please review how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.
I strongly recommend you use the Project Structure for your data.
The Tools > External Links list gives the file paths where FH is expecting to find your Media files.
If you have downloaded them, or have them saved, elsewhere then they need to be moved to where FH expects to find them.

Thank you for your responses.
The photos are from a different computer to this windows laptop as well as images of documents from Ancestry.
Sorry to sound a little dense but are you saying that I will have to go through my Ancestry tree and down load every photo and image onto my laptop then upload them individually to FH6? that seems an extremely long winded task.
I also have a FTM tree would it have been easier to have uploaded this one or would it be the same situation?

It always helps to be very specific when dealing with these technical details.
Whe you used the Tools > External File Links command, exactly what file paths were listed?
If you download your Media files from Ancestry, or copy them from your other PC, to exactly those file paths, then FH will detect the files immediately.
Alternatively, if your FTM database is essentially the same as that on Ancestry and has all the same Media images, then that will probably be an easier solution, because all the files are on your PC rather than on the Internet in Ancestry.com. Is that FTM database on your laptop or a different PC?
See how_to:import_from_family_tree_maker|> Import from Family Tree Maker (FTM) for further advice about exporting from FTM and importing to FH.
There is no harm in trying both the Ancestry method and the FTM method because FH can manage to two Projects at the same time, providing you give them different names.

Thank you again,
I have uploaded the FTM GEDCOM and all images are there in bright Technicolor
I just need to link faces and some of the document images to people and give them all a name and I will be sorted. Also will delete Ancestry upload so I don't get confused.
I was recommended to try FH by a fellow student at Strathclyde and so far I am most impressed.
Thanks again
Karen

Hi Karen
I loved the Strath course (back in 2010/1 in Bruce Durie's last year) other than, as previous user of FHn (and delighted to be back using it tho not [yet] upgraded to 5 or 6), having to use FTM.
I found/find FTM much less intuitive ... And assuming that you have been given same guidance about sources/citations, FHn actually easier in my view to get the results one wants because of its flexibility. FTM's only bonus was the link to Ancestry, but that a mixed blessing as we know!
Pity that Calico Pie was not in a position to sponsor like Ancestry did when I did the course!
