* Exporting to FTM

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Exporting to FTM

Post by bruceernest » 25 Jan 2015 12:27

I am trying to export my FH tree to Family Tree Maker.
Using V6.0, Selected Export to FTM. Used ANSI and "Use existing file paths for external links"
Most of the media is in the FTM tree media file (some missing) but is all Unlinked.

How can I Export to FTM fully linked or should I export to Ancestry first.

Thanks

Bruce

I don't quite understand what you mean by "Most of the media is in the FTM tree media file (some missing) but is all Unlinked."

Are all your FH media files stored within the FH Project Media folder?
If you use Tools > External File Links are any files marked with X?
Are all the File Links listed under the Project Data Folder - Media?

Do you use Link to Face/Detail frames with any of your media?

I presume you mean that when you imported the GEDCOM file into FTM none of the media files are linked?

Please answer the above questions as best you can, and there may be a better solution.

Thanks for the quick reply
Firstly, my latest tree on Fh is not shown as stored in the project media folder, how do I store it there?

I am not using Link to Face/ Detail

" when you imported the GEDCOM file into FTM none of the media files are linked" Yes that is correct.

Thanks

I am sorry, but your replies are confusing me even more.

Your FH Tree is not stored in the Project Media folder, only the Media files are stored there.

Lets take a step back and answer some more basic questions.
The more you can answer the quicker we will make progress.

Migrating between FH and FTM, or any other genealogy program, can be quite complex if certain basic principles are not followed.

How did you get your latest tree into FH?

In FH use File > Project Window and tell me, is your Project/Tree listed there?
If so, what is its name?

In FH use Tools > External File Links.
Please give some examples of the File Links listed there.
Are any of those files marked with X?

If you prefer, you can post screenshots of the Project Window and the External File Links window

Sorry about the confusion, latest tree imported from FTM.

The project tree I am currently working on is listed: Senter Family Tree 150214 12 Feb 2015

OK, that is all good.
You have a well structured FH Project and all its Media files are nested within the Project Data Folder - Media folder.

Not only that, but they all use Relative file links that start Media\....
To see what I mean, check the Records Window on the Media tab in the File column.
The beauty of this is when you move the Project to another Location or another PC, the File links will not get broken, because they are Relative to the Project Media folder.

Now when you export the GEDCOM with Use Existing File Paths for External File Links all those File links will still start with Media\... so FTM cannot find the files because there is no Windows file path like that.

Select the Use Full File Paths for External File Links option and Absolute file links will get created, starting with C:\Users\... that FTM can identify.

I would also advise you try the Export Gedcom File Plugin.
It has an export mode specifically for FTM 2014 but you may find the Multimedia options of AFILE or FULL work better than PART in your case as you do not use Link to Face.
