TMG Import & Narrative Report
I am a TMG user who has about 13,000 descendants in one database. I exported the file as a gedcom, and did the FH import using FH 6.0.
The FH import did not grab my notes. I did create this field myself, and the tag is Personal Notes.
The FH gedcom import did not grab all of my pictures.
If I had to go with one or the other - it is easier to drag/drop my pictures.
I have published a book using the TMG descendant indented narrative format, which I do not see with FH. I have tried all of the FH narrative reports. I guess the descendant narrative is the most similar.
Is there a way to save the narrative reports as a Word doc? When I create the rtf file, the pictures are really messed up. Looks great on the screen, but usually in Word I wrap the text around the pictures in square format.
Maybe I am missing something, and would like to use the program more - but loading/creating the reports is painfully slow. I think the update fixed that, but I am using the trial version at the moment.
I have tried Roots & Legacy, neither of them are going to work for my needs and such a large project. Like the visual layout of FH, the drag/drop, the autofill, and many other things the program will do that TMG would not. Hoping that once the kinks/mapping issues are resolve, I can bring in my notes & pictures/exhibits with few errors/problems.

Re: TMG Import & Narrative Report
Please try the direct TMG import rather than via GEDCOM, because TMG omits much of your data from the GEDCOM file.
See how_to:import_from_tmg|> Import from The Master Genealogist (TMG) for details.
FH V6.0.1 improves some TMG imported data, but is not available yet as a free trial.
Publish > Narrative Reports > Descendant by Generation is the only FH narrative descendant report and does not indent generations.
I suspect every genealogy program has its own style of report writing and just have to accept that there will be differences.
Try using Publish > Outline Reports > Descendant Outline with adjusted Report Options:
Clear Connecting Lines
Tick Spouses' Events/Attrs
Numbering Child Order(1, 2, 3)
Individual Events/Attributes All
Marriage Events/Attributes All
Layout Events and Attributes... with other info
I agree that some layout is not handled well in RTF by MS Word.
You can Save Reports as PDF.
I cannot explain why creating Reports is so slow for you.

Re: TMG Import & Narrative Report
I did the direct import from TMG and none of my notes transferred.
When I did the gedcom, the pictures did not transfer.
It is much easier to put the pictures back in, than to copy/paste all of the notes on 13,000 individuals. The direct import is a great idea, if it will grab my notes.
I did create my own notes tag, called in Personal Notes - but it might not be mapped because it is of my own creation. Yet, the gedcom export/import recognizes the notes and puts them in the correct place.
Would really LOVE export to Word.. rtf sucks... just sayin'

Re: TMG Import & Narrative Report
Calico Pie are committed to improving the TMG Direct Import, but clearly can do nothing about the TMG Gedcom Export. I presume you have reported your TMG Direct Import problems to them as they have requested. However, you are unlikely to see the improvements in the FH V6 Trial.
Did you try the Publish > Outline Reports > Descendant Outline report?
It is unlikely that FH will ever support Word Docx format, because it is not a published format like RTF and PDF, so would need too much reverse engineering. Some FH users export their Gedcom to other genealogy programs to use their report generators.

Re: TMG Import & Narrative Report
No that's not correct, docx is an open standard (Office Open XML) and is a published format. The old 'doc' standard wasn't an open standard and this is why docx replaced it. FH could support Word documents if Calico choose to do so in a future version.tatewise wrote:It is unlikely that FH will ever support Word Docx format, because it is not a published format like RTF and PDF, so would need too much reverse engineering. Re: TMG Import & Narrative Report
Sorry, my mistake - I was still thinking of the old Doc format.

Re: TMG Import & Narrative Report
I tried the rtf and the rtf convert to Word process.. all I can say is.. ugh! With over 900 pages in my book, and now 13,000 individuals - the amount of editing that is needed after rtf is monumental. Using Word, I still have to edit spacing & picture layout - but that is nothing compared to RTF.
I am going to wait to use Family Historian for the moment. TMG will output to Word and the edit process is much less time consuming.

Re: TMG Import & Narrative Report
You can always output to pdf from Family Historian and then use one of the converters to change it into docx format. There are several free ones available as well as the full version of Acrobat, which of course costs.
