Advice needed on installing trees with media
I seek advice about creating projects in FH6. I was given FH6 for Christmas and tried creating 3 projects using gedcoms made from Ancestry trees. Unfortunately, when I opened them all the media spaces were blank.
I had read advice to save the gedcoms to the desktop. I thought that a good idea as I would be able to identify the latest ones easily that way. But all my media files were elsewhere.
I worked on the trees originally with FH2 -2.3, but for some years using Family Tree Maker.
I see FH gives the options of opening trees from other programmes, or Ancestry, or gedcoms.
I think I will need to delete the projects I have installed and start again.
I have saved quite a lot of records as jpgs, but some are on Ancestry. Will they be accessible?
My FTM folder has great lists of media files (including duplicates in
some places). Will I need to install from FTM to be able to use them?
If so, will I have to add other media, currently in other folders, to the FTM folder if I want it to be used? Would grouping them next to one another be sufficient, or simply placing them in My Documents?
Perhaps adding everything including FTM to a Family History folder in My Documents would work.
What is the best way proceed, please?

Re: Advice sought on installing tree projects with media
Welcome to the FHUG.
Have a look at the how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian|> Importing to Family Historian where there is advice for Ancestry and FTM.
The way we recommend using FH is to import the GEDCOM and associated Media files into a Project.
However, it is possible to link Media files anywhere on your PC to the FH Project, but the more there are the longer it may take to set up all the links, and then the Project is not portable from PC to PC.
If after checking the Import advice, and reviewed the FH Project structure, you still have questions then please ask.

Re: Advice sought on installing tree projects with media
Thank you for your help.
I have deleted my first attempts and followed the instructions on installed from Family Tree Maker.
I now have three projects installed, each with media.
I have noticed, however, that the descriptions of items have been replaced just by numbers.
Is there a way I can get Family Historian to add the descriptions? I expect there must be.
Many thanks,
ffinder

Re: Advice sought on installing tree projects with media
I am glad the [kb]|[/kb] helped.
Could you give us a few clues as to which items are affected?
Which commands do you use to display them?
What is the name of the window they are shown in?
What box/field names define the affected items?
You could even attach a screen-shot of the problem.
