* Converting name changes to events

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Converting name changes to events

Post by JohnJ_au » 02 Jan 2015 11:31

Most of the 100's of name changes (Name-Marr etc.) in my TMG project have been imported (using the Gedcom method as Direct Import fails) into the FH project and appear as Name attributes linked to the individual's main property.

My problem is that 99% of the name changes are event-like and often have unique dates, places, and source citations. I've picked up a useful set of name-change events from the Knowledge Base but would like to automate the process of converting the TMG Name records to the applicable FH name-change event.

Is there something I can do in TMG or FH to automate the process? I"m dreading having to re-enter all those name change events in FH :-(

TIA ... John.

Do you mean the Name changes have been imported into the Name more(+)... section of the Main tab, or they appear as custom Attributes in the Facts tab, or what?
If you could give some GEDCOM fragments it would help.

The only way 'event' Date and Place, etc, would be retained is in custom Attributes in the Facts tab.

Hi Mike - the Name changes have been imported into the Name more(+)... section of the Main tab. They do not appear as custom Attributes in the Facts tab. They do appear in the All tab as attributes of the Individual record.

Here is the Gedom fragment in FH that results from importing the primary surname (Marszalek) and married surname (Jameson):
0 @I2@ INDI
1 NAME Elizabeth /Marszalek/
2 GIVN Elizabeth
2 SURN Marszalek
1 NAME /Jameson/
2 SURN Jameson

You say "The only way 'event' Date and Place, etc, would be retained is in custom Attributes in the Facts tab". Well I have a custom Fact with provision for Date, Place, etc. however I can't get (at least with Gedcom import - perhaps Direct Import will work better somehow) the TMG Name-Marr to populate the applicable FH custom tag. I'm desperately seeking a way to automate this migration :-)

In the TMG Tag Type Definition for Name-Married can you change the GEDCOM export as: tag? TITL might be a good one to try, or a custom one.

FYI: The NAME tag is not strictly a GEDCOM Attribute fact.
It is like SEX, NOTE, REFN (Custom Id), etc, that are Individual Record fields, but NOT Event/Attribute Facts, which have Date, Age, Place, Address, Note, Cause, etc, sub-fields.

When digging into these features an in depth understanding of glossary:gedcom|> GEDCOM Standard Release 5.5 is very helpful.

Have you tried the direct import, just to see what happens to Name-Married items, and whether changing the GEDCOM export as: tag makes any difference?

It looks as though TMG does not allow you to change the GEDCOM export as field for any Name tags such as Name-Marr etc. And Direct Import doesn't work for me. {Shudder} I may have to enter the name change event facts manually :-(

Although direct import does not work for your main project due to Winesses, you can still test that mode.
Create a small TMG project or use the sample project, and create examples of the Name-Married details you are interest in, and direct import that as an experiment.

Another option is possible if you can create a TMG report that includes the Name-Married details.
A Plugin could then extract the details from the report and insert them into FH.
See Import from TMG - Missing Some Citations (11462) that towards the end employs a similar tactic to transfer missing Citations.
