* TMG import with FH6 - no memos

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

TMG import with FH6 - no memos

Post by asak » 10 Dec 2014 05:09

I just tried importing my TMG file using FH v6. This is greatly improved, but I have found a real deal killer - hopefully someone has a solution.

In TMG, there is a memo field for each Event, and this field is heavily used by all of us. For example, I may list an obituary, entering the date and source citation, but the actual text of the obit is entered into the memo field. I can't figure out what FH did with these memos, but they have to be visible or I lose half of my data!

Thanks,

Asa

Me too. Using trial version of FH 6 (not as on my Profile)

Tho I failed to recognise it as a general problem!

It happened I imported a Project in which I had used MISC tags for all sorts of events - from being mentioned in a diary to joining a club or being elected to office. The info has imported only with place and date and no clue as to what happened.

Import of the same tree to Roots Magic provides the info in a Note. But not in the description field.

I put the FH failure down to my use of a non GEDCOM standard MISC tag for any miscellaneous events. So posted an enquiry on the TMG list. Asking what Tag people used for miscellaneous events.

My trial of version FH 6 has overwritten my FH Version 5 but I dont remember this problem before. If I open in FH 6 a Project imported from TMG in FH5, (I have only one) there are many notes present. But I cant see that I used the Tag MISC. So it isnt a fair test.

But when I saw I had so much stuff missing, I blamed myself and did not report it here.

Is there any answer to this please? Is it a fault in version 6 or have we done something wrong?

Do you still have in TMG the Project that had Notes import OK into FH V5?
If so, then import it again into FH V6, but with a slightly different Project name.
If the same Notes do not now import then report the problem to Support at Family Historian website.
I believe Calico Pie are keen to fix these TMG issues.

Asa and E?,

Was this direct import or GEDCOM import?

For Gedcom take a look at this thread (a bit old now but worked for me in v5):

I have little experience of the direct import but the above might explain something behind the notes/memos (in particular re ATTRibutes) but I would have thought the direct import should sort that out.

If all else fails, you may need to contact Calico Pie direct.

Thanks for all of your responses. I used direct import into v6. I'll contact Calico Pie directly. Thanks again.

Interesting! Not sure if this will help anybody but here are a couple of observations from my first import attempts:

1) In TMG I used the Memo field to record details of an individual's occuption. This has come across OK on import to FH.

2) I have extensively used the Citation Detail field in citations to record e.g. the actual text of interest. This appears to have been imported successfully as "Text From Source"

Memos for events are now imported from TMG (since 6.0.2 in fact). See http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade for a free update to the latest version, for V6 users.

Would agree with Simon in respect of 6.0.3 - I am seeing TMG Memo content coming over in the Direct import and correctly recorded (I used the Memo field in TMG for recording things like Occupations and "Cause of Death"). Not found anything missing yet.
