TMG to FH importing
Hi
I am playing around with the idea of importing my TMG project into Family Historian.
I already have a copy of FH ver. 5 and have imported TMG data via gedcom in the past, but am trying to get a better import by using the direct pjc data file. I seem to have two main problems at this stage.
1. What I keep finding is that long length notes or memos are being chopped and this causes long lists of exception files.
2. I have created in TMG a 'Tag' (or fact) called 'Research note' where I make random notes or observations that don't actually fit the usual birth/marriage/death/occupation boxes etc. For instance it could be a note to say this person may be related to another, or there is conflicting info. on a web site etc.
My problem is that these research notes are also being rejected as exceptions. I do have a considerable number and prefer not to have to do them all again if there is a way round this.
Any advice is welcome.
Regards
Ray

Not sure if these will fix your problem (they both seem related), but might give you some ideas.
1. "long length notes or memos are being chopped". This is an old problem importing Gedcom files from TMG to many programs/websites, especially if these are from ATTRibute like Tabs in TMG, don't know about direct import to FH. This thread (in particular item 30 Jul 2014 16:13) is mostly about GEDCOM import but the "Getting your data ready for GEDCOM export from TMG" there might help explain:
The Master Genealogist to be Discontinued
The problem I noted here with lines being chopped was easily fixed for the GEDCOM output by altering the Gedcom output settings, not sure if it would also affect the direct import, IF that is the problem.
With a copy of your file, you might find TMGutility helpful for things like bulk renaming events to a new tag.
2. See 1 above.
I think you are right to ask here first, but if you get nowhere note in the link from Ray that "
I would be interested to know if you get a "fix"or not.

If you decide to go down the GEDCOM route (I did because I did not use non "Gedcomable" features of TMG), make sure to also check out Import GEDCOM File in Ray's link. They (Calico Pie) ask that any problems are reported to them directly via the support@family-historian.co.uk if possible including a small sample database showing the problem.
I would be interested to know if you get a "fix"or not.

Re: TMG to FH importing
Thanks for the suggestions.
I have had some success now using the TMG to FH converter and Gedcom import. This seems to resolve the chopped memos issue and the missing notes. Witnesses and Roles is not a problem as I hardly ever used them.
I am still checking and testing but I cannot see were the TMG flags have transfered to FH, if at all. Is this something that can be done?
Also I want the married names to show in the surname listings as well as maiden names. I know I can create a custom attribute individually in FH for this, but can it be done in bulk so to speak?

Re: TMG to FH importing
Flags should have imported, try the View>Standard Query>Has Record Flag and you can review the list of flags imported. Flags are Y/N values in FH, so if you had lots of values they will be different flags.
There are a couple of ways for this, I understand in TMG a single record could appear in the list more than once, in FH this is not the case, but you can either add a column for the spouse surname or use the the Search Any Name plugin and don't select anything to get everyone listed under all their name options. Also I want the married names to show in the surname listings as well as maiden names. I know I can create a custom attribute individually in FH for this, but can it be done in bulk so to speak?

No. only seeing the two FH default flags.
I will try a fresh import from TMG

Can you make sure you have 5.0.11 installed. 5.0.10 included flags, you can check on Help>about

Re: TMG to FH importing
The above thread seems to alternate between the two methods: direct Import TMG Project database, and the Export/Import GEDCOM File.
See the how_to:import_from_tmg|> Import from The Master Genealogist (TMG) for details.
Certainly, the Export/Import GEDCOM File method is likely to exclude some of your data such as Flags and Witnesses.
The latest FH v5.0.11 has improved the direct Import TMG Project database method and should include Flags and Witnesses.
As the Knowledge Base suggests, please report any problems with the latter method.

Re: TMG to FH importing
Sorry if the thread appears to alternate between the two methods: direct Import TMG Project database, and the Export/Import GEDCOM File, but the subject line, I think, indicates the overall objective.
It appears I am using 5.0.9 but "check for update" says it's the latest version. I have however found the 5.0.11 version on the web site and downloaded it.
Regret to say that still no flags imported.
I will follow your suggestion re: Knowledge base and report the problem.
Thanks for help so far, I feel I am almost there

Re: TMG to FH importing
FH V5.0.10 says "Enhanced the TMG direct import to include custom flags (previously only standard flags were included in the import)."
I have imported the sample Project from the TMG free trial and some (but not all) Flags were included.
Those imported were Adopted, Ancestor Interest, Descendant Interest, CLERGY, and Living.
Those excluded were Sex, Birth Order, and Multiple Birth.
But I assume the Sex Flag is converted to the FH GEDCOM Sex field.
What is not so clear is how each TMG Flag Value is handled by the FH import.
Where exactly are you looking for the Flags in FH?
Use Edit > Record Flags and all Flags are listed, with a tick against those linked to current Individual.
Use View > Standard Queries > Has Flag and select any Flag to list all Individuals linked to it.
I wonder if FH only imports those Flags that have Value of Y or > 0 linked to Individuals?
That explains why Multiple Birth is excluded because every Individual has it set to ? or N.
It certainly fits all the other imported Flags.
Perhaps FH uses Birth Order to set the order of Children in the Family Record where the Birth Date does not make the order clear. It certainly fits the one case in the sample project.

Tatewise,

then fill in the fields, e.g.
2 tagtype label
3 prin1 last,given
prin1 id
4 date
1 prin1 living flag.
etc for more flags.

There might be an easier way, but I don't know it.
I think the standard flags in the TMG Sample DB are quite simple, but TMG lets you have multiple choices for each field, so for the test I did (not FH 5.0.11) it gave extra flags for each TMG option.
I found it easier just to reapply flags in FH, especially as in FH flags are either ON or NULL and so I had to revise my Flag methodology which, as discussed in another thread, included using the note field of an Event.

Re: TMG to FH importing
Thanks Jim - I did ask that question, but then removed it when I discovered in TMG V9 that every Flag is associated with every Individual. It is just the Value that is different for each Individual and that is shown by the Flags window. The Explorer window allows a Filter on Flag Values to list all associated Individuals. These lists all agreed with similar lists in FH.
