Local Notes not saving to .csv file

Hello -
New to the forum, so I hope this isn't blindingly obvious.....
I want to export my FH data to a .csv file so that I can in turn import the .csv file into a database program that happily runs on an iPad.

It's easy to create a custom query with the data I need and then save that as a csv file. It opens in the program and works beautifully. However, I have quite extensive local notes for some individuals and when I save the FH data, not all the note text is there when I open the csv file. It seems to curtail at around 150 characters per individual. I have tried exporting data to a csv file from other programs and there is no curtailment.

Any ideas please?

I will let the FH experts answer your particular problem but I will offer an alternative.

Heredis for the iPad is free and you can just load your FH gedcom file into it. I use this way to have my data with me when I am out and about. The only caveat I will say is that I don't have extensive notes fields. As it is free it may be worth a try.

This is a limitation of the Export from Queries, they truncate notes to 150 as you have discovered.

You could write a plugin to export your information with the full notes, but you will need to ensure you escape any double quotes and new lines to ensure a good export to your database program.

Personally as already stated there are so many Gedcom viewers available you might find it quicker to use one of those.

Thank you very much for your quick responses.

The last time I looked at the dedicated apps they didn't have the looks or the functionality that I was after, but time has moved on and I'll check out your recommendations - thank you!

A workaround is to use a function to retrieve each paragraph from the Notes, and which does not suffer the truncation.
i.e.
=GetParagraph(%INDI.NOTE2%,1)
=GetParagraph(%INDI.NOTE2%,2)
=GetParagraph(%INDI.NOTE2%,3)

These can be joined together to recreate the original full text:

Code: Select all

=Text(GetParagraph(%INDI.NOTE2%,1)." ".GetParagraph(%INDI.NOTE2%,2)." ".GetParagraph(%INDI.NOTE2%,3))
See the recently added how_to:display_long_text_like_notes|> Display long text such as Notes for details.
