Hi all,
I have just started using version 5. A relative sent me a file " Stafford%20Family%20Tree_ged.mht"
I tried to open and import it into a new project but FH tells me it is not a recognised format.
I can open it with IE or Microsoft word but it is very hard to understand all the abbreviations used.
Is there some other way I can import it so that it makes some sense?

MHT is normally a web page format rather than a family history file. Do you know what program your relation has? I suspect they have not used the export to Gedcom file, but rather saved the file with .ged in the name, which is not the same thing.
If the data does look like a gedcom file, try renaming the file so it ends in .ged rather than .mht and try opening that in FH.
If you post the first few lines of the file here, we can easily spot if it's actually a gedcom file.

That's come from an Ancestry site, I suspect they took the wrong option when downloading, and it has formatting around it.
There are a couple of options, ask them to try downloading again, following the instructions here to make sure they download a gedcom file and not a web page.
Alternately try opening the file in notepad, does it have more text showing around the gedcom data?

That confirms the problem, he has some how managed to convert the gedcom file to a web page, which is why FH can't import it. The simplest solution will be to wait until he gets home and get him to have another go at downloading the file from ancestry.
Edit: Another thought, did you get the file and read it from a web mail client? If so, try right clicking on the attachment and selecting Save File(or Link) as rather than opening the file in the client and then saving it.

It loaded into FH with no problems.
