Totally stuck......

Hit a brickwall with bolted doors and windows.

Names used are not the real ones.

Known facts:
Joe Bloggs deserted from the Royal Navy sometime before April 1917. On the 21 Apr 1917 he married, giving his age as 25 and Stoker as occupation. He changed he's surname when he got married, using his Stepfathers, Bloggs. He's witness was he's Stepfather.

His son, has checked with some members of the family and their not sure if he gave the correct first name. But, a hopeful but, his son's middle name is Jones, so were hoping Joe Bloggs has passed on he's real surname.

I have been on the NA website and purchased a service record for a Joe Bloggs who met the criteria and, yes you guessed it, it was the wrong one.

The family are trying to check with the remote family to see if they can help. Also nobody seems to know Joe Bloggs mother's maiden name.

So, apart from waiting 2 years for the 1911 Census to hit the web, and that may not give the answers, can anyone suggest my next move.

Steve,

Is it worth tracking down the marriage details of the step-father - this should give the details of Joe's Mother.
Obviously if it is a common name, it may take some looking for, but if you have a known occupation & location, etc, the local register office should be able to make a match for you if you supply possible dates.
Once you have this information, try looking up the Mother on the 1901 census.
