BMD tip name = MALE or FEMALE

Not sure how widely known this is, but here goes.

In searching back through my JONES line (yes not easy[smile]) I was stuck on my g2 grandfather's birth, finding no entry. General searches on JONES born in a few year period with a non-specific parish / district in a county didn't help.

I then found a likely district and tried the year and all JONES and found a reference to MALE Jones born in the right district almost the right age. I am awaiting the Birth Certificate, but on further digging I found that it is not unknown for a bunch of MALE or FEMALE entries to be at the end of the entry for a surname list, I assume births where parents couldn't make up their mind on a name.

My tip is, always try the end of the alphabet to look for these kind of stray births

My condolences on the Jones problem [smile]
I had always assumed these 'male' and 'female' entries with no first name referred to children who were born alive but died very soon afterwards. It will be interesting to see what the Birth Certificate says but I wonder how you will know it is your 2XGreat Grandfather without a recorded first name?

Several of our Campling ancestors were recorded as 'Male' or 'Female' Campling. In some cases birth certificates were modified when a name was chosen, but the index was not necessarily updated. The ones I know about all survived to adulthood.

As to proof, I'll let you know when I get the certificate. The actual place of birth is pretty specific, and I have a father's name from a marriage certificate.

Time will tell
