The name below appears in the 1851 census (HO107/piece 1904/folio 709/page 26). I know what it is - or to be more precise, I know what I WANT it to be. The person is entered as a grand-daughter of the female head of the household and, if it is who I think it is, this census would be the definitive evidence linking her mother to her grandmother.
So, I'd love to know - what do you think her name is?

It looks like Emma Thun to me. Hopefully this matches with what you want it to be?

Unfortunately not. That is how all the sources seem to transcribe it, but that's not it.

It could be Nun, but without seeing the rest of the page and having other examples of the letter in question that is just a guess.

It is difficult to see what else it could be, it certainly seems to start with Thu. Of course the census enumerator back in 1851 may have misread the census forms before transcrbing them or misheard the name said to him.

Might it be Emma Kun?
Takes a bit of a stretch to get that, but if you imagine the strokes of the pen on a sheet of paper, it might work.
What do you want it to be?

Close enough! I believe it to be Emma KEEN. I must confess that I do have other evidence. This is some of the rest of the family.
James Keen was my gx3 grandfather, Eliza Keen nee Osborn my gx3 grandmother and Richard Keen my gx2 grandfather.
I just wanted to check whether anyone without any preconceived notions could come up with a 'K' for the initial letter.
Emma's grandmother was Sarah Osborn. This census is the only direct link I have to her being Eliza's mother.

I think you are right, if you look at his style of writing on the H and e of Head, he uses the same style for the K and e of keen

Yes I can see it now. Terrible hand-writing though

I would suggest Emma Nun. I have just been transcribing a family will. All the capital letters start with the same squiggle then have the actual letter attached at the end.
