need help to clarify correct husband

Post by tracyjgiles » 05 Apr 2007 21:35

i am struggling again and could do with someone with experience to give me some advice.

In the past month I have done a lot of digging and have got some good results but this one is proving to be a mind bender. I have looked in all the usual places and failed........all help gratefully received!!

I have a Sarah Mace born 1767 in Little compton. (sarahs parents are Edward mace 1743 and sarah cowley 1744)

She had an illegitamate son in 1789 with the father named as Thomas medcroft

IGI files have 2 further children for thomas medcroft and a Sarah. George 1800 and William 1804.

I have assumed that the Sarah mentioned is Sarah Mace, but I have just been given information she might have married John Coxhead on 11th november 1799. ( now who is barking up the wrong tree??)

can anyone find this marriage............i cant!! I did find a sarah coxhead on the 1851 census living with dinah mace niece??which confuses things more!!

Alteratively can anyone find the marriage for thomas medcroft to a different sarah??

I dont want to go ordering certs if they are going to be from the wrong family!! My research unfortunately is being done on a shoestring budget!

I assume you have been looking on IGI, but have you also checked http://www.familyhistoryonline.net the Federation of FHS website. They often have entries that are not covered by IGI.

Have you checked the National Burial index or local FHS burial index for that area to see if it provides any clues?

I've just looked her up on the 1841 census and Sarah and John Coxhead are in Little Compton with Dinah Mace with them.

So to me it definitely sounds like your Sarah Mace did marry John Coxhead and Dinah must be a daughter to one of Sarah's siblings.

If IGI entries only give a first name for the mother of the child, it's generally assumed that her surname must be that of her husband. So I wouldn't think that George and William are Sarah Mace's children

The IGI is nowhere near complete and there are errors in it. They don't tend to include many non-conformist or catholic records. There are many missing parishes.

Take a look at Hugh Wallis's index of IGI batch numbers to see if there are missing years, or to look at adjoining parishes. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... #PageTitle

Use Genuki.org.uk to look up what the neighbouring parishes were, and where the records are. The marriage may well have taken place elsewhere. You might also find other useful links

Try the local family history societies to see if they've got transcriptions of marriages not on the IGI

It may be worth tracing Sarah's siblings to see if you can find them and look at where they are living - it might give you a clue as to where Sarah may have married.

Good luck
