Army regiment name

Post by IzzardResearcher » 30 May 2007 01:25

A relative has kindly scanned a letter, dated 31 October 1868, granting my great great grandfather a discharge from the army. The letter includes a regiment number, which I believe I've transcribed correctly as 2/XIIIth Light Infantry (see image below).

What I can't figure out though is the full name of the regiment, even after googling. Can anyone help please?

Did you check out http://www.regiments.org ?

It looks like they could be the 13th Regiment of Foot aka the Somerset Light Infantry.

Probably the second battalion.

Many thanks for the link Jane, it's not one that I came across when searching.  It does look to be the right regiment/battalion.

If you are interested in getting service papers and can't get to the National Archives I have used http://www.militaryresearchon.com/
before and been happy with their service, it's cheaper than visiting London for me anyway.
