Does anyone know of somewhere old UK car registration information can be researched? I have a photo from I'd guess late 1920s/early 1930s with people I'm trying to identify having a picnic around a car with the registration number YW 247. I was wondering if one route to identifying the people would be to identify the registered owner of the vehicle. As far as I can see DVLA does not hold this information if the vehicle had already been scrapped and the number not in use when DVLA first computerised their system in the 1970s. Any suggestions?

(I tried to upload the photo to here but although I tried in JPG, GIF and PNG, and had turned off my anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes, it started to uplift and then always ended 'Uplift Failed'. Am I doing something wrong?)

The file was probably too big, please check the file is no more than 800px wide and less than 40Kb in size.

I have not heard of anywhere to get old registration details from.

You could try the local council for the area the car was registered. Having had a quick google it seems that the Y prefix was used in Somerset upto 1921.

If you have car clubs in your area for collectible cars of the same vintage, check with them.  They may trace ownership of their vehicles through the 'lifetime' of the car, and be familiar with what records exist for an area.

Although Jon is right is saying that Y registration was Somerset, YW was Central London.
