I know finding death certificates isnt particularly easy but I wonder is it possible to search anywhere for a persons death if you know their date of birth?

The persons death I am looking for is that of a Charles Bartum born in 1884.

I know he married in 1908 and was widowed the same year. But after that he disappears.

Now I could look at all the deaths for Charles Bartrum but there are over 300

Is there anyway of reducing that number by only displaying those that were born in 1884 +/- say 5 years.

Yes, Freebmd has a facility to specify either the age or date of birth. Details on:

It will only work for births after 1st Jan 1866 when the age at death was included in the indexes.

But freeBMD isn't fully transcribed yet! If your Charles Bartum lived for a relatively normal lifespan (so died between say 1945-1969) then those aren't transcribed. Mostly, if I don't have any family hints then I haven't been able to find dates of death. A chance is to try to find the tombstone, some wonderful volunteers have transcribed some tombstones and have published them (have a search for your relevant cemeteries). There is an index of tombstones that is a national thing and which I think on CD- this is in the 2nd volume at present from what I understand, the 3rd in progress). In desperation I have occasionally walked around other cemeteries! (Very fruitless and makes you feel a like a morbid nutcase).

Have you checked trade directories, city directories, parish magazines, historical newspapers, etc. from the area in which he lived?

My advice would be to search for other relatives in whose records he might be listed. I found one person's date of death in his married daughter's passport application. (She was traveling from the US back to England not long after her father's death, to take care of her younger sister.)
