Firstly, apologies that this is a rather specific request, but I'm struggling with this one and someone here might have bumped into this sort of problem before.

I have an entry for an Arthur Frederick Miller in the Ancestry Christening records, giving his birth as 30 Oct 1895 and christening as 17 Nov 1895 St Anne Soho, Westminster, London. Parents are Charles William and Miriam Sophia Miller (my gt grandparents, I have their marriage cert, and the birth certs for some of Arthur's siblings).

I also have Arthur in the 1911 census with Miriam (now a widow) and two sisters. I think I also have him in hospital in the 1901 census, but nothing to positively link him to his family (I have the family in 1901, Arthur is not with them).

What I cannot find is an entry in the GRO birth index on Ancestry or FindMy Past or FreeBMD, so that I can get his birth certificate.

Can anyone suggest where else I might look, or suggest why he might not be 'on record'.

He might not be in the index.

Have you tried contacting the 'local record Office', I don't know how the London offices work, but someone else might.

The GRO indexes on all the sites are the same indexes, so if you have done a page by page check of the GRO images, then you need to go to the original documents.

Hi David, I have a very similar problem which I have been unable to resolve.  I have checked the local office with no luck. In my case I suspect the person was not registered at birth, as this has always been the family story.  Have you checked military records as he is of an age to have fought in WW1?  Although not all records are available yet, typically my person hasn't appeared yet!!Interstingly my person was born in 1892, so at a similar time although in a dfferent part of the country. Also as its london you could try the Times on line for a birth announcement, I access this free at home via our local library.  Good luck

Have you checked that the birth is not registered under the mother's maiden name?

A friend recently found a marriage registration I had been not been able to find.

I had been looking for her as 'firstname surname' and the registration was under (what I thought was) her middle name and the initial of her firstname.

To clarify -- it would be as if I were looking for someone named 'Arthur Frederick Miller' -- and had gotten zero results for a search for 'Arthur Frederick Miller' or for 'Arthur Miller' because the GRO had him listed as Frederick A. Miller instead.

That's a good suggestion, to search for the mother's maiden name, too. You never know.
