Civil Engineer

I have a birth cert from 1918, and I want to find out about the father.  His occupation is listed as Civil Engineer.  Does anyone know if there is a central register of Civil Engineers like there is of doctors, where I may be able to find out more about him?  He has a very common name and what is on the certificate is all I know of him. If he ever lived at the place of birth, then it wasn't for long.

Have you tried a WorldCat or a Google search?

Something like 'civil engineers' plus 'association' or 'directory' and the country in question might yield results. If a standard Google search doesn't turn anything up, search Google Books.

Find the modern-day equivalent to get clues for what the title might be, then see if the same kind of directory exists for the period you need.

Just thought Id post the reply I had from ICE as it does give useful info if you are looking for a Civil Engineer...

Thank you for your enquiry, I am sorry for the delay in replying.  I have checked our Membership list for 1918 but the only Wheelers I can find are Charles Forsdyce Wheeler and Jack Leslie Wheeler.

Not all civil engineers joined ICE and anyone could use the term `civil engineer’ and the letters CE after their name.  ICE Members were entitled to use the letters MInstCE or AMInstCE after their name.

He would probably have trained under an apprenticeship but I don’t think the Apprenticeship records at the National Archive go into the 20thC.

I have had a quick look on the Family Search website but as you say, I could not find his marriage.  I’m sorry I could not help, I am not really an expert on family history research outside of our records here.  I know people have found ancestors on sailing or passenger lists but I imagine this would depend on you knowing the approximate date of departure and where they would be sailing to.

I am sorry I could not help you but please do not hesitate to contact me again if you find any further information relating to his career which might allow me to help further.

If the birth was 1918 (and assuming we are talking UK), the father may have served in the services during WW1 so he would have a Medal Index Card (on-line at either National Archives or Ancestry).

You say the name is not unusual so you may struggle to positively identify him (so try Royal Engineers first?).  The medal cards on Ancestry.co.uk include the reverse of the medal cards, which often includes the address to which the medals should be sent.  You may get a matching address.  Then you can try looking for a service record (Army Officers records fairly complete at the National Archives, Other Ranks digitalised and on Ancestry - assuming they were not destroyed in the Blitz which a lot were.)

His profession would also have been noted on his marriage certificate (possibly a wartime marriage?) - you presumably know the mother's name?

Hi David, thanks for your reply. I ahve searched the Medal Index cards on Ancestry with no luck, but you have spurred me to try again. I have never found an address on a relevant record card but I live in hope!!I have also searched other service records on ancestry, I guess that a visit to National Archieves needs to be added to my personal wish list (for when I win the lottery) Sadly I have never found a record of the parents marriage although I do have the mothers maiden name from the birth certificate. I will persevere and get there one day. As the person whose parents I am looking for never knowingly met his parents its all very intriguing (sorry no good at spelling)
