I'm new to this. At the moment I've gathered information from members of the family. I want to start some research, do you have to pay for all sites? Are there any free ones?

Family History has never been a cheap hobby, but there are a few places which can be accessed for Free

They include

FreeBMD, FreeCens and the Family Search Sites (IGI) which are listed in the Search the internet option from the Internet Menu on Family Historian.

Family Search also includes an index for the 1881 Census.

There is a good guide to the Sites on the Family Tree Forum Wiki see

Just wanted to mention that Your Family Tree (re-labeled as Your Family History on the newsstands here in the States) in its March 2009 issue has an article '100 Money-Saving Tips: Expand Your Research without Breaking the Bank' -- some of the tips are for free sites.

The issue also includes a two-page spread of coupons with special offers (a few free things, and discounts on several subscriptions, including 25% off a sub to the Origins Network).

On page 18 there is an offer for a free copy of Family Historian 3 if you subscribe (ends 31 March 2009).

http://www.myfavoritemagazines.co.uk/yft/PO44 or call 0844 848 2852 (and quote offer code PO44)

email queries to yourfamilytree@subscription.co.uk

The magazine's own website has a different offer code -- W033

http://www.yourfamilytreemag.co.uk/

The March issue features the 1911 Census and includes a big pull-out wall chart, as well as the usual cover disc (a CD-ROM) with free and trial software, sample data sets, and forms.

disclaimer: I don't work for YFT, I'm just a subscriber.

Don't forget about local Family History societies and the like.

Do a Google on Dorset OPC and you'll find an absolute Aladdin's Cave of information.

The Isle of Wight has put online the local equivalent of FreeBMD, BUT ALSO giving the mother's maiden name (well, Other Name).

Sites like these are a real blessing and make you want to migrate to the place in question and offer your volunteer services!!!
